Hi. My name is Sean and I am 30 years old. I live in Pittburgh, PA, though I am originally from South Florida.
Throughout my childhood I lived a sedentary lifestyle due to the fact that I have always had extremely poor balance and coordination (which I just recently discovered is due to a neurological disorder I have), to the point where I cannot safely walk up and down a flight of stairs without going slowly and holding onto the railing. Things such as running and active play were always issues for me because I could not make abrupt movements or run up or downhill without the risk of losing my footing and falling over. As far as fitness was concerned, this was compounded by the fact that I’ve always had very poor eating habits, but, as is the case with many people, my metabolism when I was younger was able to keep up with it and I remained slim.
However, when I was 16 years old, I was put on antidepressants and the effect that had on my metabolism allowed my unhealthy lifestyle to catch up with me. Within the span of about four years, I ballooned out from being a slim kid to being over 300 lbs. At my biggest, I weighed 335 lbs. I’ve always been afraid to exercise because I know that with my balance and motor problems, I cannot safely work out with free weights or do high intensity cardio workouts without the risk of losing my footing and ending up faceplanted on the floor. Balance intensive lighter intensity workouts such as Yoga are also out of the question. I used to think that this meant being resigned to living this way, but I was wrong.
In 2008, I did something that many would think that was stupid for someone in my position: I bought a motorcycle, which I do not regret. But due to my weight, it made the bike too top heavy to be able to safely perform the low speed maneuvers needed to pass the license exam. So, I decided to find a way to lose weight and improve my overall health.
Beginning in the spring of 2009, I began changing my diet around to one much healthier and began losing weight. I also began searching for ways to safely exercise despite my physical problems. After suffering a few minor injuries doing intense programs such as Insanity, P90X, and other similar high intensity workouts (BAD ideas for someone like me--VERY BAD IDEA lol) I finally found something that worked. Now, two years later, I've lost 115 lbs and added some muscle in the process. I'm always looking for ways of improving my nutrition, supplement, and exercise program, however, as well as looking to help others who might be encountering issues such as I was, which is why I'm here.
