Hi all--

My name is Bonnie and I am 23 years old. For as long as I can remember, I have been overweight...even as a child. The lowest number I can remember on the scale was 170 when I was 16 years old. At the beginning of this year, I hit an all time high of 208 lbs. According to the BMI chart, at 5'5", I am considered obese. Not a nice thought.

My husband and I recently (about 3 months ago) moved to a new city, one that we've wanted to move to for as long as we've been together. So finally, after 3 years of making plans and never following through, we have both decided it's time to make a serious lifestyle change and take control of our own health. Currently I'm on a 1300 calorie per day diet and doing about 30 minutes of cardio in the mornings, 6 days a week. My husband and I have recently started the Couch to 5k program, which has us running 3 times per week, and we are training for our first 5k run in August. My goal is to be down near 160 lbs by that time. Tomorrow will mark one month on the diet, and as of this morning I am at 199 lbs, down 9 lbs so far! This is the first time I've been below 200 in 3 years. It may not seem like much of a loss to some, but for someone who has spent her life only ever gaining weight, losing any at all feels empowering.

I want to say that I'm very excited to be a new member of this community and I'm really looking forward to getting my feet wet. I can't wait to read people's stories, share thoughts and ideas, offer support and share in your joys and successes. Thank you for reading, and good luck to you all!!! :)

Hi Bonnie, yes, losing weight will help a LOT in running, I do cycling and every pound holds you back especially on hills. Good luck on losing and think small.

Welcome to the forum.

Its great that you are doing well - but I have to say that 1300 calories a day sounds fairly strict to me. I think that I should mention that you ought to be able to lose weight nicely while eating more calories than that... I would hate you to get to feel that you have to be that strict and it has to be either "eat 1300 calories a day and be on a diet" or "eat as you used to before the diet"... I know that I had a long track record of trying to diet to strictly and then abandoning the diet gloriously when I was a big person... It does not have to be that way...

I suggest that you read the following thread - it may help you settle in and make friends

Good luck with your project.
