Hello Everyone!

My name is Kristin. I'm a middle school special education teacher. No, my career choice does not mean I am crazy, it just means I like adventure in life. Trust me, middle school students are full of adventure.

I just started working out on a daily basis two months ago. I'm 5'10" and 140lbs. I don't really need to lose weight, but I would like a much more tone body. I've tried a few different means of working out: jogging, yoga, Tai Chi, and yoga has been the only thing I've stuck with over the years. Mind you, my definition of stuck with is on again, off again.

Besides a lack of motivation to keep with a work out routine, I've also had a few other hang ups. The biggest hang up is my hips. Before I started seeing a chiropractor, one of my legs was an inch longer than the other b/c my hips weren't aligned. Before the chiropractor fixed me, there were points when it was extremely painful for me to walk. In my early 20's, I remember more than a few times when I needed my husband's help just to walk across our tiny apartment living room. I'm happy to say, I haven't experienced that kind of pain in a few years now.

This summer I decided to make a commitment to change things I didn't like about myself. I started writing again, grew a vegetable garden, eating healthier and began seriously working out. The vegetable garden ties in perfectly with eating healthier and working out.

Laugh, raise your eyebrows and snicker all you want, but what got me working out on a regular basis AND really enjoying it is the Nintendo Wii Fit. The Wii Fit program measures my progress, provides me with a personal trainer, and measures my weight placement on the Wii Board and my movement with the Wii Remote to prevent injury. I started working out 40 minutes a night and have since moved up to an hour and 20 minutes a night. I have nice routine that starts with yoga that thoroughly stretches out my body. Then I do strength training to work on problem area (like abs and rear). Finally, I end with step aerobics and boxing to burn a few extra calories and cool down. I love it, and am slowly starting to see the results of my hard work.

I'm joining this forum b/c I have to start teaching again in a week. I want to make sure I stay motivated to work. Also, I have a lot of questions on how to eat properly. Hopefully, I'll find the answers here.

Thanks for reading this extra long post.

Mmmm. home grown veggies. Welcome.

Hi Kristin! I'm Carinna. Welcome to the site. I think it's great that you've made a goal to totally revamp your lifestyle. And you're right, everything else sort of ties in together.

My problem area is more my mid-section than my thighs. But I can relate to what a struggle losing in those areas can be. I've been working on mine all summer. (You can actually see my before and after pics if you want, at the link in my sig line.)

I also have the Wii Fit. My boyfriend and I think it's a blast, you hardly know you're working out. And every little bit counts.

Well, welcome again, and I hope to see you around the boards some time.

Hi, Faery--Welcome to the forum!

I, too, am a Wisconsinite--I think the fitness board is about to be taken over by cheeseheads! I also have a daughter entering middle school, and have dealt with SI-joint issues like what you describe in my day--not fun, mine was also treated with chiro, successfully.

Read around here--there are many knowledgeable people and great info--I'm guessin' you'll be able to find the answers to your questions! ;)

Thanks Everyone

Thanks for welcoming me. I'm glad to hear there are fellow Wisconsinites on the forum. I look forward to reading everyone's post and learning a thing or two.

Welcome! As a husband of a Special Ed teacher, and a student that will most likely get that cert as it offers more openings than regular ed, welcome to the board. I tried the Wii fit a few weeks ago. It really is a fun little tool that will certainly build a sweat. I also found the boxing to cause me to be soaked as I desperately worked to avoid having my wife kick my ass!
