Hello everyone! Newbie here in need of some advice!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to these boards and I've come asking for a bit of help.

First, a little bit about myself. I'm a 26 year old man living in New York City. I lead what seems to be the typical lazy American life style. Recently, I went to see my doctor for my yearly check up and my doctor called me back after analyzing my urine and blood samples and said "Freddy, you're a mess. You have to get your crap together or it's gonna get bad down the road." To be honest, I never really worked out. I occassionally went to the gym on again and off again but never really had the dedication nor the drive. The only thing I really do that can be counted as exercise is that I walk alot. My doctor told me the only reason I'm not a fat slob is because of the fact that I walk everywhere. I don't eat right. I do drink alot of water. Now I know alot of people probably come to these forums at this time every year with their new years resolutions to lose weight and all that good stuff but when a doctor tells you you're gonne be in trouble if you don't shape up, it's kind of a wake up call. I was just wondering how to go about changing my diet (the right things to eat, drinks, etc), how everyone on here stays so motivated and maybe help figure out a workout program for me.

What I'm looking to do in the gym is take my fat and turn it into lean muscle. I'd like to be completely solid. Even though I'm a lazy schmo, I firmly believe in the saying "go hard or go home". I'm gonna dedicate myself to getting into better shape just need a few helpful hints on how to get started.

I really appreciate you taking the time out to read this and I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays.

Thanks,

Freddy

Also, I'm not asking anyone to write me a blueprint of what my workout program should be (I know that can be a pain in the butt) but just some helpful hints and tips. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks folks!

Freddy - Way to go for making the decision to change. That is the perfect first step. My husbands doctor tells him every time he goes in that he needs to take better care and lose weight. It is important to get a good balance of protein/carbs/fat. I have had a trainer tell me 40/30/30, 40% protein 30% carbs and 30% fats. I have found a great way to track this. I use the website , it tracks the percentages for you. There has not been a food I can't find on their site. It will also let you track exercise. Balance is the key. You are also on the right track by drinking lots of water. Do you drink soda? Diet or regular? I ask because I have read that they interfere with fat burning. I love fresca and energy drinks and have found that when I drink them on a regular basis my workouts are not as easy or effective. Anyway I hope this information helps. Keep posting your progress. Good Luck!

You can do this Freddy! I'll tell you what has always been my weakspot, "Motivation!" It's easy to push yourself once you get started, but it's the getting started part that I have the biggest issue with. When I'm on-season for boxing, I put a little note on my alarm clock that says, "Put on your gloves!!!" I set it for before I have to wake up to do anything so that I'll have time to put on the bag gloves and at least work up a sweat. If I just lazily get out of bed, I find it's easier to back out of my commitments to working out. The other thing I've done is stick signs on my fridge that simply have the phrase 'HARDCORE' written on them. It works for me, but I've been hit a lot so don't expect some philosophical explanation as to what it means. These are just reminders to keep my diet in check. Nail these two simple things, and whatever your exact plan is will be WORLDS easier. Sawatdee.
