Hello, weight loss friends.

I don't know how much I weigh, because I refuse to get on a scale. I know it is probably the heaviest I've been - my guess is somewhere around 145.

I'm 5'6, 22, and was around 125 most of my teenage life, and have slowly been gaining weight over the past few years. I have terrible self control when it comes to food, and really want to become more disciplined, but I eat emotionally and in the past year have had plenty of reason to over eat - thought it's not an excuse for gluttony.

I am anemic, so I'm often low energy, and I'm trying to figure out how to conquer this thing. I'm small boned, as well, so while I hide the weight pretty well I am not built well for carrying any extra weight. Considering all that, I keep a pretty good body image - but I do need help getting the motivation to really make a difference.

I am probably like a size 9 right now, and would really like to be down to like a size 5. My body frame is built for being on the lower range of the "healthy BMI" chart, and I don't think being a 5 is unreasonable. Maybe it is? Maybe some of you could help me.

I'm really serious about kicking this, though, and any advice or wisdom you guys would have to share about starting would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rebecca. One of the first things you wanna do is make an attack plan. After you weigh yourself, set small targets. Instead of saying "I want to lose 30" lbs, break it down and tell yourself "I want to lose 3 pounds this week (or 2 or 4)" and challenge yourself to meet that goal each week. This way you get a sense of accomplishment for those small victories even though you haven't reached you goal weight. This might not apply to you since you don't seem like you have too much too lose but it might help.

Also, be sure to document your program, both physically and emotionally. Keeping track of daily calories has helped me enormously. You feel much more accountable for what you put in your mouth when you have to face the calorie log at the end of each day. This will also help you see trends and pick out trouble spots. You also might want to keep a list of reasons of why you want to lose weight and other motivational thoughts so that you have something to keep you going whenever you begin to lose your drive.

Moderation cannot be stressed enough when it comes to diet. Don't deprive yourself of cravings, just practice cutting back on your portions and work them into your daily calories. It gets really easy eventually. Most importantly, prepare for bad days. Don't let a single binge throw you off course. Just pick up where you left off afterward. Always remember, there's no rush to lose weight. Do it once properly and don't spend the rest of your life doing it wrong.

Hope this helped and best of luck to you.

Hi Rebecca, Welcome
It's good you want to lose weight before it gets out of hand
A few things first: You said your are anemic. Have you had this diagnoised by your Dr.? If not then that should be the first thing you should be doing because if you are then your Dr. should have helping you with a diet plan depending on the cause.
Next: You need to weigh yourself. It's not good to just guess what we think we weigh. Clothes sizes can be very deceiving.
With that said this is a good supportive site for losing weight.
Best to you Lynn

Hey Rebecca,

Welcome. I am in the same boat as you. I actually started around 158 or so and my goal is 125-130. And I am 22 as well. I used to dance competitivly, Everyday. So i was in great shape. Then I had to stop. Anyways the weight crept up sooo I started to find things that I love to do. So I try and do classes. Its reminds me of dance classes and its a great workout. I go to zumba classes and hot yoga classes. Those are my favorite. You should try yoga or something like that. Even workout videos you can get any kind or do some off the internet. If you would like to do a little bit of weights, you could get 5 lb weights and do those at home. Just some helpful tips.

You can do this!
