Hello another newcomer

I decided to join this forum because it is so good to read and learn from everyone's experiences. I don't know anyone else trying to lose weight so I feel a little alone in this process. I think that is why I have tried and given up before. The avatar I am using is definitely not current but it is really the only picture I have of myself and it I am thinking to use it as a reminder of where I want to go.

I am looking forward to actually making it to my goal weight this time and reading about people who have succeeded makes me think that this time, it really is possible!

I love the newbie stickies to read for ways to approach weight loss because every idea that I can incorporate into my weight loss plan helps!

I love your nick *celerystalksme* that is great. I just wanted to say hello and wish you lots of success and support with your journey. You have come to the right place for sure. Michelle

Hiya welcome to the forum. Sorry to be a broken record, but love the play on word in your name :D

You will love this place. The people here are so supportive. I recommend starting a weightloss Journal (in the Diary threads area) as that was the real turning point for me. It helped me be more accountable for my efforts and it gives the wonderful people here a place to offer support and advice.

Again, welcome ;)

Diets Don't Work - learn to eat like an animal!

Hi Celery,

Welcome aboard! Like you, I'm a newbie to this board as well. However, I've lost 30 lbs and I'm keeping it off, plus I'm in pretty good shape. Here's my advice to you.

When I was trying to lose weight, I tried every diet out there. Like Tawsif, I often got close to my target weight, but as soon as I went off the diet, the weight would come back with a vengeance. The problem with diets is that you're forcing yourself to eat in a way that you will not be able to maintain in the long term. And really, isn't that the goal? You want to lose the weight and keep it off!

I would suggest that you start keeping a diary in which you record everything you eat throughout the day. Also record your mood, the circumstances of why you're eating, and the time. I think you'll be surprised how often you're eating when you're not really hungry. That's the problem human beings have. We are eating for every reason under the sun EXCEPT hunger. This is the exact opposite of what every other animal in nature does. They just have more common sense, I guess.

You also need to start an exercise program of some kind. I would recommend doing a program of full body, natural movements. Again, kind of like animals do in nature. Tigers and Bears don't lift weights or run on treadmills, yet they're far healthy than any person (as is any other animal in nature). Yoga might be a good fit for you. That's one of the things I do, anyway.

You can read more about this on my website, which is dedicated to this kind of exercise and fitness philosophy. (you can find it by clicking on my profile. I can't put it here, I think) Good luck!

- Dave

Thank you everyone for the support!

Especially dnordmark for the suggestions. I did start a food journal because it is the only way to really keep track of what I was eating. I am finding that the snacking and little things are how I probably gained the weight in the first place. A co-worker always keeps gummies and candy at her desk to share and I took a handful of gummy worms and ate them without thinking the other day. I checked the label later and they were 40 calories each! Holy cow! I used to be a frequent visitor!

For exercise I completely agree that gyms, while they provide opportunities to exercise, don't encourage the range of motion that is really useful in life. I have tried to lose weight before and joined a gym but never enjoyed it. This time I am swimming and doing a combination of walking/jogging. I want to give yoga a try for sure for the flexibility and muscle endurance.

Welcome to the forum Celery. Also those are some nice ideas. I myself go for walks to stay in shape, drink lots of water, and watch my food intake. ^^
