Hello America!

New member
I am new(have just registered tonight) and I suppose like most of you I need and want to lose weight.
I have always been very slim(height :5'10'' weight: 9stones 4) but because of a few events(illness and the loss of a very good friend), I put on weight by eating the wrong food(sweet and greasy) and snacking all through the day.
I have calmed down however I would like some of you to give me some tips of how you did/are doing it, like a typical eating day for you. I find I lost track of what is a normal portion as well.
MY question would be: did sport help you when losing weight?
Thanks for taking the time to read my pathetic indroduction and hopefully you won't be put off by the fact that I am French!:)::p

We love the french :D really :D

Where in france are you from originally?

and you weren't being ignored - we just don't always catch the new member intros right away :D

Portion control is the biggest obstacle for people - if you don't have a good set of measuring cups/spoons you might want to treat yourself to them - it helps to retrain your eye what portion sizes look like.

I measure and weight practically everything still..

Welcome and feel free to start up a diary -it's ag reat p lace to get support and for us to learn lots more about you

welcome and have fun

Thank you

Oh Thank you very much Safe sex(??)that makes me fell much better.
I need support as you might know losing weight can be quite difficult.
I like your tip about the measuring. I have scales and I think it's time to start using them. However I am no quite sure how much I should beeating.
I forgot to add that I am 95 kilos which is about 15 stones I think...
When did you start losing weight and how did you start?
Thanks again for your nice message:)

by the way

to reply to your question I come from the South West of France near Spain and the Pyrenees(not very far from the Atlantic Ocean) but I've lived i England(south east) for about 8 years now.
What about you?

When did you start losing weight and how did you start?
I started in May of 2006 - and started by weighing and measuring everything and basically telling myself that there is nothing i couldn't have as long as it fit within the calorie range I was eating (I used to record my daily calories - it helped to keep me honest abouot what i was eating.

I live in Chicago but am originally from new Jersey - both in the US - I've never been to spain but would love to go someday - I loved france once i got out of Paris :D

Parisians

don't represent France very well I am afraid!!!lol They are arrogant and rude and give the French a bad reputation(by the way they only like themselves:p
I know the map of USA a bit as I did a degree in English and we used to study American civilisation and litterature.
Spain is great and the South West of France is lovely(people are much nicer than the Parisians!Actually not very hard is it?;)
Did/Do you do any sport?
Thanks again for your tips , that is really nice of you.

past month and a half i've been going to my local gym - walking on the treadmill and doing a bit of weight lifting.. I need to do more :D

Chicago is in illinois and it's in near the middle of the country - on Lake michigan (one of the great lakes) New Jersey is on the east coast, on the atlantic ocean.

I am having a look at the online diet diary and that seems very interesting!
I know I should stop saying it but...THANK YOU!

well done

I am going to start walking(I know it doesn;t sound much butI need to start somewhere, I think you would be quite appalled by the lack of exercise I do...not proud of it:eek:
How come(if you don't mind me asking) you live in two different places at the same time(well not quite!;).I know how big is Us!
Maleficient, what would be a typical eating day for you please(just to give me an idea)?

to any of you

Maleficient has been nice enough to talk to me...I can see that people ar ereading my thread but nobody posts anything...
I could do with some support and some help so feel free to give any advice that helped you to shed the weight and if you are in the same situation than I that is not having started yet and not quite sure where to start, please feel free to discuss it with me.
Thank you!:)

I understand

I just want to encourage you, I know that you are concerned with the fact that you are canadian, but I am pleased to tell you that none of that matters here. We are all here for one reason, and that is to give support and it does not matter your age, nationallity, religion,ect.....You asked a question about how we managed to loose weight and stick to our diets. I noticed this was not only a physical battle but a spiritual one, I decided to relinquish my struggles with my weight and turn it over to God, who has not let me down. I have peace, understanding (in regards to the foods that I consume) Weighing your food is an awesome idea for portion control, getting active. The bible says that faith without works is dead, so I can't just believe God for help and restoration I have to eat right and excersise.......If I have offended you with my relationship with God please let me know, but this is what helps me.....Hang in there I know you can do it!!!! :) :)

Thank you

for your support Lovinme.
You haven't offended me at all when you talked about God. I am absolutely non-judgmental and I think if praying God helps you to have the strength and the determination, i can only be a good thing.
I am not Canadian(you are right Kaitie) but French!(even worse!:p
I really like this website for the understanding and the encouragement. I have good friends who would encourage me but I feel more comfortable talking to people who are going/went to the same experience than I.
Are you doing any sport?

Hello Kaitie

Thank you!
I am sure that was me bing a bit impatient to talk to members and that it will come eventually in good time!:)

Hello Sandrine, welcome to the boards - we're not all Americans here! There are posters from the UK, other parts of Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, India, etc. Most people record their weights either in kg (international) or in pounds (USA) - stones is just a British thing that we sometimes like to use in order to confuse the foreigners ;)

Take a look all over the forum - there are boards for nutrition, exercise, online diaries, before and after photos etc. Stay around and you will find plenty of support here - start a diary and you will soon see people popping in to see how you are doing. You can also consider joining a challenge when they arise, or one of the 'clubs'. :)

Thank you Toothlessferret

I understand stones as I live in the Uk , it was just pounds that we don't usually use here, well not so much for someone's weight.
I am impressed by your weight loss but I have the impression that it's a bit easier for men to look trimmer as they have more muscles and less of a sweet tooth!;) Am I wrong? Was it very difficult for you or did you get to it quite easily?
Funny enough , I always wanted a dog, first because I like animals but also to give me a reason and a companion to walk...

I do seem to find it easy to lose weight its true. In fact, I'm coming to the end of my weight loss journey. My family are concerned that I could be losing too much weight. I weighed myself today, and on one of my two scales (the one that weighs lower) - I came in just under 10 stone! So I think that I will have to stop soon.

I think that I find weight loss easy because I am very active. I am a manual worker - I work shifts in power plant, so I naturally burn a lot of calories in normal life. All I really needed to do was start eating healthy food, and I would have probably have slowly lost weight. I lost 48 pounds (over three and a half stone) last summer then stopped trying to lose weight. My weight was perfectly stable for the following six months, but I decided to cut a little more now, because I want to reduce my body fat for the summer.

I can understand

your family point of view and their concern as you don't seem to weigh a lot for a man(don't get it the wrong way). I presume it depends on your height as well.I am saying that because when I was slim I used to weigh 9 stones 4 and I was 5'10''.I t seems that men should weigh more for the same height as a woman as you have more muscles.
The thing is if you feel fine, that's all matter nad you seem very aware of what you should weigh.
Well done really on your fabulous weight loss!:)
I hope I did not upset you and if I have I do apologise...

No problem Sandrine and thank you for your comments. I just took a bike ride down town, and somebody else said that I was wasting away :( I'm 5ft 8" and I know that 10 stone is on the light side for a man of my height - although still within the 'normal' BMI band. I'm going to lose 'just a few' more pounds, then stop cutting calories again.

I do strength train as well, 2 to 3 times per week, and once I have stabilised my weight again, I hope to start increasing it by going slightly calorie surplus whilst improving on my weight lifting.
