hello, am new to this forum

I am 40+ and want to start a fitness routine. I am interested in walking, exercise bands, and yoga. I have some physical limitations including but not limited to balance, coordination, and range of movement issues. I am average height and weight with a small bone structure. Does anyone have any tips on how to get started? Thanks.

Appreciate the welcome and guidance

Thank you LV for responding and for the great links. Getting started is my obstacle right now. I don't know quite how to begin. I want to go walk around the block but keep "getting other things done first".I guess I just have to force myself to do it. Thanks again.

You only have one body and one life my friend and none of us get this time back so make it a point to look and feel the BEST you can in this life.

We are all here to help you along.

sweat daily! do jumping jacks, pushups, walk, wash dishes, clean the garage-- just get a sweat going each day. The momentum will pick up and take over, BUT, and this is a big BUTT! lol! YOU and YOU YOURSELF have to make a move!

you can do this.

many of us, most of us, probably all of us, can attest- that once we got moving, we were glad we did.

only YOU can cease the suffering of sedetary!

JUMP!!!! We will catch ya. Let's hear you complain about sore muscles, stinky clothes, and needing ideas of what to do next.

SWEAT DAILY!

FF

1. Buy a used bike on Craigs List, but post on here for my advice before buying so I can give you some bike buying advice. I'm old, fat, slow, dumb and arrogant but I know bikes. Don't spend more than $200.

2. Contact your local bike shop (LBS) and ask them if there are any organized newby rides nearby, generally on Saturday a.m.

3. Ride with those folks and you will become stronger, lose weight and increase your endurance.

Good advice g8r80. Having people to ride with or exercise with etc will really jump start the passion that will take you over. Its the best motivator in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum :)

thanks for advice and encouragement

Thank you to all who responded. I certainly appreciate the encouragement. The bike idea is a good one. I am female, makes a difference with bikes I guess. I know a guy locally who refurbishes used bikes. Is it important to buy new or just important that it be the right fit? I love walking but have a very tight achilles tendon. It was stretched once when I was seven but is still very tight. I stretch it before walking but it still spasms and makes the experience painful and frustrating. Any stretching exercises for my stubborn AT would be much appreciated. Thanks again for the help.

It is very important that the bike fit you properly. Tell me your inseam and height and I'll tell you the range of bikes that will fit you.

As for new, I do not recommend buying new for you. Buy yourself a used bike on Craig's List that is a good brand and model, but outdated. All Treks, Cannondales and Specializeds are suitable as these companies don't make junk. Treks in particular are easy to find on Craig's List. I picked up a first generation Trek mountain bike for $25 at a thrift store that I ride several miles a week on. I didn't have to do anything to it - not even replace the tires. That is the kind of bike you should buy. Do not buy a bike at Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Costco, etc. - you will hate riding it and quit.

As for the Achilles tendon, I don't have specific information, but all tendons are non-living tissue that is elastic and stretchable. After I broke my leg snowboarding in 2001, I was in a cast for 8 weeks during which time my AT shrunk up. After walking, painfully, on it for a couple of weeks, it was fine.
