Hello all!

I notice this forum after signing up today so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a 24 year old guy living in Seattle. I graduated from college about two years ago, and have been married for around a year and a half. I've also been decidely overweight according to my BMI since shortly after I met my wife around five years ago.

I'm 5'8, and this past fall I weighed 185lbs (the heaviest I've ever been). I hate fad no-carb/super-low cal/run on a hamster wheel diet and excercise plans with a passion, and as I suspected the formula's pretty simple: eat healthy whole foods, eat less of them than your body needs by a little bit each day, and find a type of excersise you enjoy doing. Just watching my portions for a few months, I dropped to 177lbs by the end of the holidays.

I enjoyed weight training a lot while in high school and early college, so I joined a gym in December and began lifting again. I haven't built much muscle running a calorie deficit, but it's excercise I can enjoy, it burns calories, and the membership gives access to ellipticals and treadmills which is helpful since running in the winter in Seattle means enduring 36 degrees and raining in the dark. I generally lift and do about 30 minutes of cardio @ around 160bpm four times a week, MTThF.

My diet isn't strict. I try to eat whole grains, and use portion control to keep my calorie intake in check. I aim for a 350 cal breakfast, two 250 cal meals while at work, a 300-350 calorie dinner, and a 250 cal late meal. My protein generally comes from chicken, fish, and dairy (switching to non-fat from 2% did wonders for me personally).

On the whole, I'm down to 158 lbs as of my most recent weigh in last Friday in spite of missing some time due to illness in recent weeks. I'm hopinh to continue losing 2-3lbs a week for another three or four weeks, and then move to focus on building muscle as I get into the 145-150lb range (which should bring me into the low double digits or so in body fat %).

welcome to the forum brother. It seems you are on the right track. You will learn much here, as I did, just read around, ask questions and im sure we will be able to assist you in your goals.

I agree, you're getting it done right now! While the winters in Seattle are dark and dreary, there are a lot of outdoor activities even during the winter, e.g., road biking, mountain biking, skiing, cross country skiing, do you do any?

I LOVE to ski, but haven't made many trips this season. Do a bit of snowshoeing but haven't been this year. What I'm really looking forward to is backpacking season - dropping 25-30 pounds of fat is pretty much the same as just leaving your pack behind on a weekend trip, and that has me pumped for hiking. Forget counting ounces, I'm counting tens of pounds of weight savings this season!
