Hey,

My name is Andrew. I live in Washington, DC.

Starting Weight: 270 (3/1/2008)
Current Weight: 260.5 (4/1/2008)
Goal: 190 (I want my BMI to be in the normal range)

My one issue is that I don't look my weight.. I look about 25lbs less than I weigh at any given time. So does BMI matter if I look healthy? Can you still have health issue if you BMI is higher then it should be but you look good?

The picture I attached is me at 265.

Anyhow... This is a great forum!

I personally do not like BMI. It has its place but it shouldn't be the only tool you use to determine health. It doesn't know anything about you except how much you except how tall you are and how much you weigh. There are many other things that go into being healthy. You can be healthy and the BMI tell you that you are overweight. Knowing your body fat is great if you can get that done but the testing can be expensive. Can I ask how tall you are?

And great job on your 10 lb loss so far!!

I understand that about BMI... Its not really a great tool (too bad my health insurance company uses it). I guess my concern is what a heavy weight can do to you other than make you look fat. What if I look skinny but weigh alot? Can that have health affects... the weight alone?

If your weight is proportional to your size and not compromised of a bunch of fat, then no, I don't see how it would be an issue. If you bf% is in a healthy range, you are eating well and exercising then your weight on the scale is rather irrevelent. At this point I think you know whether or not you need to lose fat. Don't think of it in terms of weight on the scale, think of it in terms of amount of fat on your body. Do you need to lose fat or not? Do you know your bf%? Do you have a way of getting that measurement? Do you exercise? How is your diet? Do you do weight training? Do you play sports?

I have no idea what my %bf is. I will most likely go see a doctor soon to get a physical. I know I have to lose fat but I really don't look 260lbs. However, my health insurance costs more becuase 260 puts my in the highly obese cat through a high BMI.

My diet now is 1000-1500 cal a day, 1500-2000 on weekends (Been doing that for a month and I rarely get hungry) I normally eat yogurt and a handful of cearal for breakfast (Maybe a banana instead of the yogurt), a 6" subway sandwich (the jarad menu) and bag of baked chips for lunch, and a salad for dinner. The one constant is that I always go for a high fiber option. I found that I was eating more before becuase I was bored or had bad options like fast food. It might be all the fiber that I'm full now. I also now only drink diet pop.

I do karate for 1.5 hours, 1-3 times a week. Walk about 1 hour a day becuase of my commute to work. I also have been using the stairs at work everyday. As I feel lighter, Im starting to do pushups (which have always been hard becuase I fel like im lifting more weight).

Once I lose more weight, I am going to slowly increase my activity level each week.

Really, I am just concerned about my actual weight... can that in and of itself (with a healthy BF% and other things being normal) cause issues? I'm going to bring it up with my doctor.

All in all, I know that its working as my pants feel bigger and my energy level is increasing.

Let me add to that:

Its not all about the weight. I do want to look and feel better. Not to mention I want my body to be happy so to speak in health regards.

From what I've personally learned in college and in my own study, no, unless you have some kind of medical issues, like a bone disease.

Howdee, neighbor!

Greetings from MD! Good health is so much more than a number on a scale or a BMI index. I'm sure its quite likely that 2 people the same height and same weight could be comfortable/healthy at different weights. For myself, I dont know what weight/number is my actual goal- I plan to assess that as I continue to lose weight.

I would work towards a goal @200-225, and then go from there. I would also consider making an appt at a dr. for a physical where he/she could do a work up of how healthy you are on the inside, and help formulate a more definative goal.

Gratz on your loss so far!
