Hello all...trying to lose 30 lbs...

Hey there. I joined this forum because I've decided that I want to lose 30 pounds before classes start back Aug 29th. I'm a 34 year old single mom, work two days a week and the other five days are saved for college classes. I'm 5'5" and as of this morning, 235.4 lbs. Thankfully, I've got a lot of muscle in my legs so I don't look quite that heavy although I don't really look good either. It's approximately 41 days until classes start and I've got a lot to lose, so I think 30 lbs in that time is a tough but doable goal. I will definitely need the motivation and help that I believe this site will provide.

I lost weight from a higher weight than you and have worked very hard throughout my project. In maintenance I still eat very healthily and now walk at the much reduced level of a minimum of 6.5 miles per day.

I would be very surprised if you managed to lose the amount of weight that you mention. Losing 2 pounds a week for 6 weeks is generally doing pretty well and I would think that 18 to 20 pounds would be extremely good going.

Any expectation of doing more than that in a healthy way stands a good chance of setting you up for a fall - in my opinion.

In 6 weeks you can become much slimmer than you now are and much healthier - but I would hate for you to set yourself up for disappointment down the track.

You will certainly get a lot of motivation and information from this forum.

Good luck with your project.

Thank you Omega. I know it's definitely a lofty goal. And I will not be trying it in an unhealthy manner by any means. I like my food and enjoy eating well. But I'm also one of the 'shoot for the moon and you just might catch a star' type of people. :) I understand I'm aiming quite high with that. If I get there, I will be thrilled and go buy a few outfits before classes start back. If I don't get there, I will still be quite thrilled with any weight that I manage to lose.

I just thought I would clarify that so I didn't sound completely out of my mind for setting such a goal (which I apparently did lol).

And I have to commend you, you've come a long way. That is awesome! I know you're pleased with all the progress you've made.

Hi and welcome.

I have to agree with Omega that 30 lbs in 41 days is kinda unrealistic - it's also not a terribly healthy goal. I understand wanting to set ambitious goals and not hold yourself back, but I'm concerned that you're setting up a goal that is so unrealistic that when you don't reach it, you'll feel like you've failed and give up.

A healthy and safe rate of loss would be 1% of your bodyweight per week - or for you, around 2 to 2.5 lbs per week.

That said, at your current weight, you could probably aim for around 3lbs a week for at least the first couple of weeks and I don't think that would be unrealistic. You might even be able to manage a full 20 lbs in 40 days ... just because you're starting out and will see some significant loss.

But even to get there, you'll have to be VERY strict with your eating and exercise. I'd say around 2200 calories a day and some combination of weights and cardio alternating days for 6 out of 7 days a week.
