Heavy Meal @ Supper

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the weight-loss plan that I am currently following.

For me personally I'm having trouble to control my food intake during supper. but I have no trouble to eat very little or even skip my lunch and/or dinner.

So I was thinking to myself, why not put my one and only meal at supper and have at it. I still have probably 1K-1.2K calories per day (my BMR=~2K), and I need a lot less willpower to follow my diet plan consistently.

I know... I know.... it's probably not the best plan to lose weight. I'm also aware that my metabolism will slow down dramatically by doing so. But I figure, worst-case scenario my BMR will slow down to... say 1.8K and I still have a comfortable 600cals short per day.

So my question is, would this work? I know a lot of people are saying that heavy meal at supper is bad because it'll turn into fat very quickly when we sleep afterward. But I think 1000 cals is 1000 cals no matter when you take it right? My 1000 cals worth of food won't magically turn into a whooping 1.5K just because of the timing.... right? The whole energy can't be created, only converted thingy.

Yes, I know there probably are a dozen of better plan to lose weight, but hey if I find something that works for me, I should stick with it no?

All your comments are highly appreciated =D =D

Thanks!

better off working hard to split your meals up to more than just 1 meal. Your body really doesn't work well on just one meal but if you are talking pure numbers then yes, 1000 in the evening is 1000 anytime.

I just wouldn't suggest it.

Hi Jericho,

Thanks for the input. But what other effects are there other than my metabolism slows down? Since you mention our body doesn't work well on 1 meal a day.

If I divide my 1-1200 into 3 meals, I would only be able to eat around 300-400 cals per meal, which is fine for lunch and dinner, but for supper I tend to eat more. That's why I'm thinking of skipping the other 2 meals altogether but having more calories budget on supper.

Well, could you give some more statistics about yourself? Age and gender and height and weight?

i eat a bowl of cereal a sandwich and then a largish meal for tea a day. my large meal is cooked from a calerie counting cook book tho, it usually sais nomore than 300 cals per serving but i have quite a big serving so somtimes it could be 500 cals or more. even if it was 700cals that would take my total calerie intake to less than 1500 for the day still. i also keep alot of fruit for at night when i`m famished.

my tip is to deffinatly get some calerie counting books in.

Yes if it works for you, then do it. I had been a 3-meal-per-day gal, and then one day ran out of what I had been eating for breakfast, so I just skipped it. I ate what I normally did for lunch and dinner, didn't feel hungry, and lost weight a bit faster. So anecdotally I can tell you that if you stay within your calories, and eat fewer meals, that yes you will lose weight. There is a whole philosophy towards doing this exact thing, called intermittent fasting. is a great resource for that. I can't speak highly enough about that blog. Just make sure that you don't overindulge at dinner because you're starving. I only say this because I do it more often than I care to admit. :)

Thanks for the calorie counting tip, I agree completely. To make sure that I stay within my calorie limit I kinda eat selectively, only from food which calories amount I know well (i.e. 1 cup or rice = 675cals + veggies + meat=200cals).

The sad things though is that I haven't been losing weight, tried doing the plan starting last Monday..... >_< Usually for 1kg per week I already see result around this time of the week. Maybe I need to cut my rice portion in half.

Yeah... i find myself famished after practically fasting for the entire day ^_^ Really need to keep fighting the urge to overindulge....

Hmm... While it will probably affect you in different ways like being more annoyed during the day, less able to concentrate etc. Eating one big meal a day won't fuck over your metabolism in any meaningful way. It will not even come close to cutting 200kcal of your BMR, not at all.

However, what it MIGHT do is make you more tired throughout the day thereby lowering your activity level thereby lowering your caloric usage. But it will not fuck over your metabolism in an "internal" way.

The whole starvation mode is so overblown. You can find the studies done on it on pubmed and as far as I remember after like, a week or two or super restricted diets (around 800 or 600 I think? calories a day) the RMR was lowered a little, but like.. it isn't like our bodies can magically not use calories.

If it works for you, as have been said, then do it. Some people are great with a 6 meal plan, some work with 2, some with 1... I mean.. some do intermittent fasting to live longer... Whatever works for you buddy, just keep counting those calories.
