Heart Rate Monitor Help

Hi, first time poster here. im 5'10 211 ( i was 225 a couple weeks ago). for the first time in my life im losing weight and im not doing some kookoo diet. eating healthy and working out hard. anyway im very very curious about how many calories i burn. in particular during bikram yoga. when i plug my weight and time into the calorie counter websites they all say 1450 cal which seems like a huge number. then i read that it doesnt burn calories at all but just makes you sweat. from what ive read the most convenient and accurate way to calcutae calories burned is a HRM (please tell me if you know another way).
so now im looking for a HRM that calculates calories burned, is there any you guys can recommend?? the ones i see have those chest straps r there ones that dont? thanks all.

Since the amount of calories you burn during any prolonged activities is directly related to your heart rate you could use any heart rate monitor which accurately reads your heart rate to estimate how many calories you burn during yoga.

There may be some heart rate monitors (i have never seen them) which don't have the chest strap but they wouldn't be as accurate.

You can also use charts which show how many calories you burn (on average) for certain activities which are relatively accurate if you pick one which narrows down important variables such as your age, sex and weight.

well the problem i am having is that i read that bikram yoga burns 1500 cal for my weight. but then i read other articles that say it is little more calories than a sauna or steam room. its no fun doing the class and if im not burning that many calories i would much rather do something else. so im not sure if ill be able to use a chest strap in class.

There is no direct correlation between calories burned and exercise. There are too many factors. Fitness plays a big factor. For example, a skilled cyclist can turn a high pedal at a high rpm with minimal calories. A lesser skilled cyclist would burn more calories to accomplish the same feat. Also, body size, gender, age, all affect calories burned.

As for your needs, most of the Polar models would serve you well. I have an FS3 and it is fine for what you do.

I have a polar heart rate monitor, an F4, and it was one of the best purchases I have ever made. It is only one of the really basic ones, but I put in my age, sex, weight and it reads my heart rate and tells me the calories burned :) The most accurate way to do it.
