Healthy Weight

I'm confused again. Surprise! LOL

I am 6 ft tall. I'm not exactly sure what my healthy weight range is.

There are countless useless calculators on the web and most of them say approximately 160-165 lbs.

But I've noticed other women on this site, who are also 6 ft tall are striving for the 130 mark.

I've measured my wrist and apparently that is supposed to tell me my bone structure? LOL My wrist is slightly over 6 inches (measured the widest part of my wrist). That puts me in the "medium" category.

What's the deal?

I thought 180 was a good goal for me but now I'm not sure.

The truth is that no one can tell you what a healthy weight is for you. You can get an estimate, but everyone is different.

Look, when I started losing weight, I weighed nearly 250. My goal at that time was 170 lbs. I figured that was what I weighed when I got married and although it was a bit heavy, I figured it was achieveable.

When I got close to that, I realized I could easily lose more and be healthy and comfortable. So now my goal is 135 which is what I weighed in college (and at the time I wanted to weigh less).

I know people who are my height and build who have lost even more - who currently weigh 115 and they are perfectly healthy and look fantastic. I know people who are my height and look amazing at 140.

It's all just an estimate. Get to your first goal and see how you look and feel. That's all anyone can tell you.

Kara's right; it's all a vague estimate.

Personally, I wouldn't get too caught up in what your "healthy" weight is or isn't. According to the BMI chart, I'm supposed to weigh like 140 lbs. Umm, I haven't weighed 140 lbs since I was in like 5th grade. When I'm at my normal weight, I'm usually around 200 lbs, NOT 140 lbs. According to the BMI chart, 200 lbs would make me obese, but that's my normal, healthy and decent looking weight.

So, don't get too caught up in the numbers. The numbers only serve as a guide. As long as you feel healthy, that's all that matters, you know?

ignore the scale. look at yourself in the mirror. Thats what really matters. I weight 215lbs for example. There are guys who weight 50lbs less than me that would love to look like I do. Scale is a useless measure of health or beauty. Especially when your goal is any level of athleticism or tone. it's very possible to be both smaller and heavier than you would have thought.

This has always been true for me too. I have always weighed more than people would think I do. Maybe it's because I have more muscle, I don't know, but at 140, I look fine (although I still feel I need some more work). Lately I have been finding too that even though the scale doesn't move that much, I'm going down sizes, weird.

I'd agree with all the above posts. I know when I lost weight before through weight watchers, they told me a healthy weight for my height (5'3") was between 140lbs and 112lbs. I managed to get down to about 125lbs and that was good for me, any lower and I would have looked ill, but I also felt healthy at 161lbs, so it's all about how you feel in yourself.

I think you should expend your energy to assessing your body type and genes and figure out what will make you feel healthy and pleasantly look healthy....to you.

For being 6 feet tall, and if you want to look healthy, I say around 150. That is, if it were me.

150 looks horrible on a 5'0 woman, but on a 6'0 woman, it looks just right. IMO!

I was thinking back to my teen years when I was semi-anorexic (I ate a mayonaise and mustard sandwich every other day for a very long time). My lowest weight I can remember was 140. I had bones stcking out all over the place. So I'm pretty sure that's too slim for me. I'll see how I feel at 180 and then decide. Thanks for all the comments/opinions!

I second everything said before me... I have the opposite "problem" (it's not a problem as such, just a situation really). I have really light bones I guess and a small bone structure (I am 5'5), everyone always doubts when I tell them my weight because they think I must weigh more. I carry my weight badly distributed too, my lower arms and legs are very thin and my torso, especially my lower abdomen, is chubby. My boyfriend says I am a gazelle, chunky body, skinny legs (he himself, he says, is a lion, giant hands a feet, muscular body... though I think he sees more muscle than I see on him ;)).

I need to go into the underweight catergory to be happy with myself I guess, 115 gives me a BMI of 19, but I am pretty sure at that weight I will look the way I want to look. I am not sure as I haven't been there since... well 6th grade I guess!

I know you are just giving a helpful assurance here, so this is by no means jumping on you here. ;)

When I was 150 lbs @ 6' I guess I looked * Average*, but a lil chubby. But I've also felt that average in my opinion is a lil chubby.

At 131 lbs I'd hardly lost any inches, but I had started losing in my lower region finally. I still felt healthy, and could run faster. :) Plus I have the measurement's that a model is required to have. :)

No, I am NOT saying ppl whom are 6' should get the body of a model, or that everyone should aim to be one yadda yadda, but it is a *hobby route* I've chosen. & I have the body for it & drive. :)

Besides you could be a medium frame, but you COULD also be small framed too, I didn't think I would lose weight on my wrist, but I did! lol :)

Take Care
