Has this happened to anyone?

So I just joined up here and I have been dieting for about two weeks. Last week, I lost nearly 8 lbs and was thrilled. I am now halfway into the second week and I am shocked to see that I have GAINED back one pound. I am eating about 1,000 calories a day (or less) and trying to work out a bit, too, and I am so discouraged to see the scale go up when I am giving what is a big effort for me.

Maybe I am overreacting--has anyone else had experience with weight gain this soon after starting a diet? I figured it would be a slow and steady decline, decline being the key word. I am eating way fewer calories than usual and exercising more than usual, also drinking plenty of water. Any ideas?

If anyone is curious, I'm 5'4, 23 years old, 180---oh no, wait, 181... lbs. Blah!

Why do you think 1000 calories a day is a good idea?

Stop what you're doing now - Get rid of every notion you've had about dieting and start reading teh stickied threads.. Start in nutrition where you will get a realistic calorie count to shoot for.. and then go to on topic..

Thanks for the tip. I have been doing more reading around the forums and I am now trying to set reasonable expectations for myself. I don't eat THAT much to begin with, so I'm don't feel like I'm starving myself when I eat 1,000 or even 800 calories a day. I'm never terribly HUNGRY, it's just the junk food cravings/emotional eating that have been my downfall.

Also, after reading some of the posts in the stickies, I'm realizing that I should not obsess so much over the number on the scale. I'm trying to be a little more optimistic and little less panicked about the whole thing. Thanks again.

I agree... that 1000 cals should not be a goal to shoot for. I think a big difference between people who lose weight and keep it off vs gaining it back... is if they lost weight in a way that was a life style change they could live with... A better mind frame is... How can I have a healthy beautiful body rather than how can I lose the most weight.

As far as that extra pound on the scale... on the week days I work at a vet hospital with a big scale that weights in Oz so it's hard to not hop on it... I notice an extra pound on the scale for a number of reasons, eating late the night before, having too much coffee on the way to work, bloating/h2o retention, breakfast... shoot probably not even having a bowl movement

My best advice & I know it's hard...I heard this advice 100x before I actually started doing it. Weigh once a week @ the same time every week. Your weight fluctuates so much throughout the day that you aren't getting a true idea of your weight loss. It is so discouraging to see it & I know that, but if you are constantly weighing and you see it go up it can discourage you & make you quit, & it can stress you out and make you gain!

I weigh myself at the same time and in the same way every day with the understanding that my weight will go up and down. It is upsetting to see the numbers go up but that just happens. Over time they go down. For me, I need to weigh myself daily. This way, when I cheat, it shows up immediately and I am chastened. I don't trust myself enough to weigh once a week.

no dont get discouraged, since how long have you been on this 1000cal diet??? and what do you eat when you are on diet, this is really important coz this will help me analysing your problem better

Maybe I am overreacting...

No you are not!
these things happen, when you are really putting your effort into something and you are not getting desired results then, it happens. also plzz tell me what type of exercises you do and what is the frequency of doing those exerciese
