handstands=> flyingfree? anyone?

can anyone give me tip on how to hold a perfect handstand in place?
iv been practicing for like 3 weeks now and i can only hold it for a little while(3-5 seconds)

should you have your head down, facing behind you?
what are good ways to practice?

First you have to get into the proper handstand position. Then you have to have the arm, leg and core strength to hold it. You might want to practice against a wall until you are strong enough to hold your body perfectly straight without assistance.

If you get somebody to spot you, have them only hold one of your legs. If they hold both, when your arms fail, you'll fall on your head because you won't be able to get your leg down to come out of the handstand.

As for form, your hands should not be wider or narrower than the width of your shoulders and your entire body should be held very straight and tight in a handstand.

Your legs should be held tight and straight together.

Your torso/core should be tight and straight as a board. Have someone take a look at your handstand from the side and ask them if your body is straight. If it isn't, correct it.

Keep your head neutral. If your head is arched back, it will cause your back to arch. If your head is tucked forward, it will cause your back to round.

Coming out of a handstand: you can go either forwards or backwards, depending on personal preference. Most people come out of handstands the same way they went into one.

Good luck :)

Start with the wall to develop the strength. Keep doing them free however and just stay up as long as possible.

You will get better quickly. One thing that really helped me was to that when I go onto my hands, my feet almost feel like they are gonna fly over. So I feel like I am gonna do a somersault. However that is when you're feet are at vertical. Keep your feet straight and together as well.

Keep practicing and practicing!

Here's a quick way to find out whether your core is strong enough to do a handstand:

Lie on your back. Get a friend to pick both your legs up about 3 feet off the ground.

If you can keep your body straight with no problems for 10 seconds, you're good to go against the wall.

I can handstand, walk on hands, and press up:

having said that...

against the wall, doing press-up. not just standing. The press up develop the lil connector tissues.

then the 3 point, and slowly work towards bending and straightening your legs, practice breathing, and soon you will feel yourself gain confidence.

then move to a downward facing dog, and start going into a hand stand. getem up and then right back down in control.

then you put your hands flat, fingers wide open, let your legs spread util the weight begins, and lean into it. Focus your eyes on that third point (where the top of your head used ot be)

think strength, balance, lean- athlete.

and you will get it PB.

alot harder than pistols to learn, but not nearly as hard as you have worked to get the pistols you have.

gimme a sec-
yep! Just did it-- feet slightly wider than shoulders, bent over, placed hands, launched up into a stand, no movement of hands, toes pointed and took a nice deep breath!!! I am a bad mofo!!!

I wanted to do handstands.... for heck, I don't even remember why-- oh yes,,, a TKD routine. It was for or demo dealy we did at the local school on the great american teach in like 3 years ago.

a girl doing a handstand, ro walking on her hands is about as hawt as anything can ever get!!!!

let's see yours

show me yours I'll show you mine!

When my bicep tendon tear has healed, I'll be able to do a two-arm handstand and I'll take a pic of me (provided I remember).

I actually tried a one-arm handstand last night. Not really something gymnasts learn. It was tough. Suffice it to say, my legs were not together. They were spread out in a "L" shape in order to maintain my balance. My left leg was directly over my right arm. My right leg was to the side and my left arm was also held to the side.

I couldn't hold that for more than 6 seconds. My freaking legs kept moving and throwing me off balance ...

hahahahah NIIIIIIIIIIIICE tony...

here is a one hander for you ILM

yes that is me. I can hold that for as long as I can hold my breath. not able to breath with that!

how you like me now!

OH I have energy to burn right now..... hope ya'll can tolerate me over the next 8 days.

WOWWWW FF i am impressed.
thankyou for the advice, ilovemuscle and FF i really appreciate it.
il be practicing a lot. i eventually want to be able to do 1 arm handstands!!! thats so cool!

If its of consolation to anyone else I hate gymnastics, especially since FF can do a one stand handstand. Gymnastics should be for those who cannot eat and lift iron.

You hate gymnastics? HOW CAN THAT BE! :D

I was a gymnast. We all pumped iron. And we also ate quite a bit of food ... we just burned it all off pretty quickly because we were in the gym 6-7 hours a day, 6 days a week.

I probably ate more being a gymnast than I've eaten since. Probably close to 5,000 calories a day. And I only weighed 118 pounds at the time.
