Hand pain after grip training

Hi, Group.

First post here. Only just found the site and I may be around more often as I am just kick-starting my own program (again - too many false starts but this time I really want to make it work).

This particular question is not specifically to do with weight training, more to do with an injury that is affecting my ability to train.

I've been training with a gripper for a few weeks now, usually twice a week. I have resisted the temptation to increase this because of all the precautions I've read re: over-training but, I fear I've screwed up somehow anyway. I have a pain in my left hand (my weaker hand). The pain is not there all the time and it doesn't actually hurt when I use the gripper. In fact, I usually have to move my hand in just the right way to cause the pain (see below). I'm trying to figure out (1) what is wrong, and (2) how long I need to rest for. Here are the details:

location of pain -- somewhere between the first knuckle of my index finger and my wrist. I don't actually know the correct way of numbering your knuckles but it's the one that joins my finger to my hand. :)

how to make it hurt -- (this is a little tricky to explain so bear with me). Imagine holding your left hand out, fingers straight and parallel to the floor. Push down on first knuckles of pinkie, ring and middle finger. Push up on index finger's first knuckle. Ouch. The pain is more intense if I resist with my index finger and almost non-existent if I completely relax my hand.

Needless to say I have stopped training my left hand until I figure out what's wrong. Does any of what I said above make sense? :) My thoughts are that I have microtears in the tendon but that's just based on some Googling.

Cheers, Max

could it be a tendonitis? does it feel like the pain is in the tendon?

I don't really know where the pain is coming from, Karky, just the general area. I would probably have to go and see someone so as they can see exactly what I am talking about - forums don't work for everything. :) It's really weird though, I have to move my hand in very specific ways for it to hurt, the rest of the time I am blissfully unaware of the condition.

I just played around with it a little more, the pain seems closer to the base of my hand, at the wrist.

I'm going to take it easy anyway. That's a bit of a bummer since my left arm lags by right arm and I was trying to get them both to the same stage and progress from there. I have been working my left side harder. Hopefully my new program of strecthing will also help the recovery.

Cheers, Max
