Half of Me:The Story of Fat Girl Slim

Damn, Ali girl! You are smashing things left and right! :smash: That 5k under 30 is right there. You'll get it if not this week then next. How cool is that? :driving:

Totally cool :)

I am even getting the breathing thing under control, it isn't great but it is much better than it was. I am honestly stunned at my progress.

Thrilled though...

You get one good day running and you think you can take over the world...

Silly girl, you should know better :)

Went to the gym tonight, it was a running day. I felt on top of the world from my run Sunday so I thought, what the heck, if I could do 5.6 sustained, what's 5.8.

The running gods thought this was amusing stuff.

I started at 5.8 and tried 6.0 (b/c hell, I can do anything I set my mind to) and just about died. I got winded within the first 5 minutes and I had to stop.

In all, even after I slowed down, I had to stop three times in all.

Annoying.

It would appear that the temperature of the air I breathe has a lot to do with my success. Sunday, I was running by a fan and I was ok. Today I was in the hallway between the basketball courts where there is no air and I did terrible.

Lesson learned there...

Thursday is another day...

I can run a lot faster and longer on the road then I can on a treadmill. Don't know why, but treadmills kill me. Even at slower speeds.

How far did you go tonight?

Hey Ali! I started running regularly about 4 weeks ago and I'm loving it... progress is slow though, but steady!

Any tips...? (It DOES get easier right????)

2.83mi in 30 minutes...an improvement but not really considering the three stops i had to make to keep from dying...

Running on the track, etc is still harder for me - I want to become more proficient on the treadmill before setting myself back like that...

do you see a difference in your weight and breathing yet from running?

I kinda rededicated myself to this two weeks ago, Brian and Steve gave me some really good advice on modifying my WT and once I implemented that change and added the running in, things have started to move again. I am out of the 180s where I was stuck for so long, so I am happy.

I don't know that I have any real tips that would help since I am still struggling with it except that running in warm air is harder :)

I wouldn't worry so much about the breathers that you've been taking. It's keeping the speed up and that's good. You'll soon be to where the breathers become more rare and then disappear. Keep it going, doll.

I am trying believe me. This was the first breather I took and I felt like a failure which is just stupid. I know I'm not and I have done a lot here. Hopefully they do disappear b/c I actually like running now (don't die on me Brian) and would like to get better at it...

See, I hate running. If it wasn't for the goal I set I would quit after the first 1/4 mile. That's when it hits me that I'm tired. I know it's good for me, so I keep going. Glad to hear that you like it, though.

So far I do although the crappy run the other day didn't help...
Geez you cannot base anything on one stinking day Ali. :)

Have you progressed since you started running? That is all that counts. If you have not you need to revisit it. If you have then you are doing fine. Mind you I can tell from your posts that you are progressing so you are fine...:D
dont make me come back out to Jersey to be your personal running coach...
I am not as nice as I seem to be here. :D

You are doing great btw and will break the 10 min barrier sooner than you think you will.

I do better on the road also. I think it is because I control the speed and can adjust up or down slightly as opposed to being locked into one speed on the treadmill.

Come out to Jersey huh???

Hmmmmmmmm...I am the worst runner in the world. I can't breathe, I have no form, I have no clue what I am doing...generally I just suck :D

I am progressing but I am generally frustrated by the breathing thing b/c I think that without it I would be sooooooo much further along than I am...at the end of a run, I am tired but think I could go for longer if I could get the breathing thing under control.

I'll live, I just can't get what I want when I want it. Such is life ;)

Missed this -

my weight dropped after I started running, however the breathing thing is getting better but is still an issue. I expect that it will improve over time, I'm just being a baby about it.

See, I'm scared of the road - I tried it before and it hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt...I am just going to need to get over it...something to word towards :)

That is me exactly. I don't enjoy it. I never have, and I probably never will! I still do it, though, because I know it's good for me. Plus, I enjoy pushing myself on something that challenges me, because running is definitely a challenge for me.

I have yet to get down the breathing, so don't feel bad. I'm bad about gasping for air, as though I'm taking my last breath! I have read you're supposed to do the whole 'in with the nose and out with the mouth', but I have yet to get that down. Really, I have yet to actually try it. :dupe:

I'm also really slow. But I'll keep on keepin' on, and hopefully I'll get better!

Wow - I just made that whole post about me - sorry! :bigear:

This is an interactive diary :) No big deal at all...everyone's contributions helps, believe me.

I am a mouth breather so breathing through my nose actually makes the problem worse. I am hoping that it is a conditioning thing and that it will eventually get better.

I also do this b/c I like a challenge and do not like the idea of something 'beating' me. Everyone's support here is helping me get better at this.

I have seen some gains in ability since I have started this and I would really like to hit a 10 minute mile soon. I am at about 10:30 now according to a friend of mine (b/c I am too lazy to do the math) but shaving off that 30 seconds is huge and is going to take time...which coincidentially, I have a lot of...

At any rate, it is better than it was, which is a victory in my book :)

Me too!!! I actually made the effort to breathe through my nose while running tonight, and it only made things worse! I don't take in enough when I breathe through my nose. I have realized I breathe through my mouth all the time. I, too, hope it gets easier with better conditioning.

30 seconds off a run is a big deal!!! You can get there!!!!

I was talking with a woman who does marathons, well one and training for another, and she said that she always breathes through her mouth. She said that she just can't get enough air through her nose. It isn't what they recommend, but if it works for you all the better.

Thanks! I really hope so - I want to do well at this so badly :)

I am so happy that I am not the only person with this problem - I have been attempting to explain it and unless you have lived it, it is hard to understand. Breathing through my nose makes me feel like I am being suffocated.

Thanks for telling me that Trops...it is good to know that you can be a mouth breather and still be successful at this.
