Guideon's diary of change

Glad you were able to get out, even though you got all muddy! When I was growing up mudding was one of my favorite things to do, but our version of mudding consisted of riding in the back of a pick up truck and getting all covered. Ahhh... those were the days! :)

LOL sounds like lots of fun Mandy.

Went out to dinner yesterday evening with mum, dad and sister. Really nice, and I stayed away from desserts :)
Also decided I will start to run. Have to get myself a pair of decent running shoes, so that's gonna happen this weekend.
Any tips or advice on getting started in the running game welcome!

Hey Guideon, just caught up on your thread. It sounds like you have things well under control, great job!
Were you able to do all of the exercises in the P90X program when you went through it? I have a friend about 75% of the way through now and he said he has had to substitute exercises here and there because he was unable to do some. I plan on doing the program myself in about a year, when my weight is closer to target and my strength/weight ratio is more in my favor.

Well at the weights I've been, running has been out for the most part. But back when I did run, the one thing I always read was "run for time, not distance."

There was a plan designed to get you to be able to jog for a half hour straight with no breaks. It involved jogging for two minutes and then walking for four (repeating five times) the first week, and then every week after jogging for a little longer and walking for a little shorter. I think I managed to get it up to three cycles of nine minutes of jogging and one minute of walking before life eventually got in the way.

If I were to start now, I'd probably just use my heart rate monitor. Keep jogging until my HR got into the 160s, then walk and then when my HR dropped below 130, start jogging again and so on for the half hour. But at my age and size I'm really worried about my joints.

I could do the exercises, but no way like Tony Horton or the others in the video are doing them. There are some variations in the exercises to make them easier (not easy, easier :) ) so I used the variations (still do in some excercises).
When I started I couldn't complete 1 pull-up, could barely do 10 to 15 push-ups.
I had to use the chair in pullups, go to my knees during pushups exercises, but that's OK. Like Tony says: just do your best and forget the rest!
I'm getting better at this, can do about 7 pullups now and pumping out 40 pushups with relative ease.
In the yoga department of the program, I'm not that good. I'm still not very flexible, but that's also because I find yoga to be tedious, so I regularly substituted that with a cardio workout.

I tried a P90X routine at the start of my weight loss journey, but got nowhere near halfway through at that time, and the next morning I didn't want to move, my muscles were so sore then :D.
So I took the same route you do, lose the weight and get in shape (conditionally) first and get working on the muscles later.

Yeah. I used to be worried about my joints too with the weight I was packing. Still am but I feel fairly confident that either I can do this, or face the fact I'm not there yet if it is a strain on my joints (so not pushing through if I feel I can't yet).

I am less worried about my age. My dad ran his first marathon when he was 58, I'm sure as hell gonna beat him in that department :) .

I found a similar program you're describing (starting with the alternate running -walking), and I also found a training program based on the data from my heart rate monitor from the last two months. The last one seems to be more intense, so I'll start with the basics first. Don't want to overdo it.

First goal is running a 5 k in october, together with my sis and her little girl (she's nine and really into athletics), and the ten week program I have selected should get me there *fingers crossed*

Hey, you are doing really well with the exercises! Plus kudos to you for staying away from the dessert!! Sometimes it's hard - I just had 5 baklavas in one day!!! How about that for discipline? Mind you I worked them off..but still.

Doing a 5k sounds great & totally doable for you!

Thanks Justina!
I feel weird when I don't workout, even if it is a rest day in my schedule. I'm not feeling guilty or anything, just like there's something missing.
So on rest days I usually do some cardio, of go out on a walk or bike ride if the wheater is nice.

5 baklava's? I would feel absolutely stuffed :) good for you for working them off!

I'm happy to hear that you're seeing and feeling progress in your working out. It's a great feeling isn't it? To not be able to do something at one point and then with a little work the next thing you know you can do it pretty easily! It's amazing how fast you can feel the changes too. :)

Keep up the great work! :)

Is sure can go pretty fast. The single rounds of P90X and Insanity each have done wonders for my body. I can feel the change, specially because I'm gaining confidence every day I workout and keep myself in check foood-wise. Sure does help that I had some coworkers, friends and family in the past few weeks who complimented me with the way I look, such a nice feeling that ppl recognize what you're doing and respect it.

Hopefully my weightloss can keep up with the changes.
Tomorrow another weigh in, hopefully a step closer to the next mile stone, the one hundreds.
Allthough I've been weighing in at least once a week for the better part of three years now, still always a little bit nervous if it's gonna show a loss, even though I know I put in the work.

Hi there :)

Sorry I am late to welcome you to the forum! You have made fantastic progress so far...I really commend you for sticking with it through the up and down. It's pretty cool to see someone who has completed Insanity & P90X through! Your determination is fantastic :)

Thanks Camila!

Weigh in this morning was kind of surprising. Exactly the same as a week ago; 206.0 lbs (93 Kg).
Disappointed at first, but after having it let sink it for a while I'm OK with it.
Sure I would have loved to be a step closer to a milestone, but I know I didn't fall off the wagon last week.
My educated guess it is either because I had a huge week before this week (3 lbs lost is one of the biggest week numbers I've had since I started in 2010), or because I've started lifting weights again since a week and a half, haven't done that the previous two months. So maybe I lost some fat but gained musclemass.
Anyway, I'd better prepare to take small steps at a time again, I'm committed to my current workout schedule for the next month and a half.

Maybe my runningschedule will contribute to some more weight loss. I'm hoping to start soon, if only the wheater could get better. Still autumnlike here. This morning my central heating was on, it was that cold. Normally we would be thinking about cranking up the AC this time of year :(

It is normal to hold a bit of extra fluid in the muscles when you start lifting so staying steady on the scales is a good result :)

Boy, it sure does sound like a lot of us are fighting with that scale these days! I agree it's probably either muscle mass developing or water retention caused by lifting. As long as you know you're doing right, I'm positive it's not fat gain. Keep up the good work!

That's probably it. Whenever I have an unusually large drop, things do tend to hold up for a week or so before the drops begin again. Keep up the good work and you'll get to where you need to be.

Thanks everybody for the support!
I'm sure I'll pick it up next weigh in.

As a "reward" for losing nothing this week and heaving a hard time to get myself to start the workout today, I "Jillian Michaels-ed" myself through today's workout (Insanity pure Cardio). Far fewer short breaks than normal, shouting at myself if I wanted to stop (wonder what the neighbours thought about that :D ).

Sounds like you really got determined and fought your way through your exercise yesterday. Congrats on pushing through it. Job well done! :)

Well sometimes you have to fight through it, can't have the "bring it on" mentality all day every day. I guess it's all part of the process, building some character.

Today was much better, legs and back and abwork.

Off to the store tomorrow, to buy running shoes, can't wait to begin the "absolute newbie to 5k run" schedule. *excited*

Bought running shoes yesterday and today day 1 of the schedule to get me to do 5k.

Felt pretty good, so good that I altered the schedule halfway, more running, less walking in between.
I think that 5k race can happen way sooner than october. New goal for october: 10k race :)
So gotta find a new race somewhere in august to do a 5k.
