Grr, I hate being discouraged. Just a quick question. (Beware: bra and panty pics!)

Okay, so I was at work today and one of the girls asked me if I wanted some pizza. I politely declined, and told her that I was going to lose a little more weight, and tone up.

Basically, she told me that my goal was unrealistic, and that I didn't have the body shape to be "tone". She told me that I was larger because of my body shape, and that I'd look anorexic if I lost anymore weight.

Mind you, this isn't the first time someone has told me that.

So, I'm just curious... is my goal realistic? Am I right in thinking that I can look like this:

Or close to it...?

I was just a little discouraged when she told me that I'd never really be toned and tight because of the way I'm shaped.

By the way, this is what I look like as of right now. I am in my bra and underwear, so beware. I'm not quite at my goal yet, you see. He he.

Thanks, guys.

Of course you can accomplish your goal! I wouldn't let one person's comments discourage you in any way! It sounds more to me that this individual is expressing jealousy that you have the determination to accomplish this goal. Unfortunately I have come across many individuals who try to discourage as well...for instance I was told that I would never get below 200 lbs....right now I'm at 169 lbs...

I hate to be cliche' but you can do anything you want as long as you put your mind to it! It sounds like that person didn't have the will power to reject the pizza to me...

Well, when people told me that I couldn't lose weight, I never let it get to me. Weight loss is the easy part, because it's all about the numbers. Numbers eventually have to go down, but that doesn't mean you'll see results.

When someone tells me that I can't get tight and fit because of my shape, it really bothers me. Especially because of who it was coming from.

She's pretty knowledgeable when it comes to being fit, and I guess I just let it get to me.

I suppose I'm just looking for someone to tell me that it's physically possible rather than mentally possible, you know?

Thanks for your continued support. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. :D

Of course you can look like that, and you are very close to it! You look good. You just have a tad excess weight and need to develop a bit more muscle tone esp. in your back and abs to assist your posture. Throw those shoulders back and stand up straight like the girl in the pic. Use your abs to hold you up tight like her. Do you work out or just cut calories to lose your weight? I would think you'll need to add in some exercise to tone up like the girl too, but I think you can definitely do it! Very amazing will power to turn down the pizza too!

I work out like a mad woman. I do at least 30 minutes of cardio everyday, and I've slowly been adding in some weight training. I'm just very new to the whole "toning" thing. I'm not exactly sure how to go about it.

Do you think that fat will come off with the muscle training, or should I try and drop a few more pounds first? I know you tend to gain some weight when putting on muscle.

Sorry to sound stupid. Lol. I'm just kind of clueless. :)

Thanks again for your response! :)

Of course your goal is realistic!! You'll never know unless you try. And dont let anyone discourage you, its not like they can predict the future.

Good Luck!!

Urgh! I hate that crap! I once had someone tell me not to bother exercising .. as it would do no good for me!!!! I MEAN!

Don't let weak, mean spirited, jealous people have any control over you!

Of course you can get to that look.. as someone else said, you are not that far off now! I think it might be worthwhile seeing a Personal Trainer at the gym, showing them your goal girl.. and getting true advice on how to achieve it :)

Best wishes to you anyway!!!

Don't believe it until you see it! I've seen a lot of people make this sort of comment to people trying to lose weight, but I've yet to see it be true yet. Just keep working at it! If you DO end up looking terrible, it shouldn't be hard putting the weight back on, right?

Really though, your body type doesn't look large to me, so don't worry about that! I'm so sure you can get there! :)

Thanks! :)

Weight lifting is extremely effective at fat loss and "toning". Being toned generally means you look strong and fit, like that woman, and that comes from having muscle tone that you will not really get from an aerobic routine. I can tell you working out with weights can burn a lot of calories, especially after your work-out when your muscles are growing and recuperating.

Dont worry about the scale going up from weight lifting as muscle weighs more than fat..but why would someone mind the scale being higher if its muscle and not fat? And fear not, women do not have the hormone levels necessary to grow large bulky muscles like men so you do not need to worry about that at all.

Figure out a way to get a really good fully body weight lifting workout going twice a week for 30 - 45 minutes and try to go heavier with the weights and progress from there rather than sticking to low weights and not moving up. I promise you will not bulk up, again because you're a female and also I can see that you dont have that stocky type of build. You will feel so strong and sexy, and weights will actually make you more curvy in the butt and boobs believe it or not, and simple crunches along with using the weights on other body parts can help give you that stomach (since your stomach is always being actively used to stabilize you during non-machine weight lifting).

Good luck and dont listen to supposedly knowledgeable people like this chick at work who really sounds like she has no idea what she's talking about!

Off topic, but you are SO pretty!!

Anywaysies, that girl was probably jealous. What a terrible thing to say to someone. Did she know about your weight loss? (I've seen your older threads!!) She was probably trying to discourage you.

Thank you very much. You've really helped me out a lot. :)

I feel really comfortable about the weight lifting thing, and I'm going to start working at it today. I had no idea that working with weights could make you curvier. I've always had this idea that working with weights would somehow make you look more like a man... I guess? I know that sounds sort of strange, but now that I know differently, I'm really excited to start using them. :)

I have a pair of 5 pound weights and a pair of 10 pound weights. My boyfriend has weights that go all the way up to 55 pounds, so I think I'll be good as far as that goes.

Thanks, again, I really appreciate all of your help! :D

Awe, thank you. I'm blushing. :D

She did know about my weight loss. The funny thing is, she's been taking an essay writing course in college, and all she's been writing about has been health and fitness. That's why I thought she knew what she was talking about.

I suppose that no matter how much research you do, you can still have no idea what you're talking about. He he. :)

looking at your pics my very first thought was you only do cardio. It was pretty much confirmed a few replies later. your muscle development is quite lacking and i'm seeing some imbalnaces in your posture. you have a weak back and core specifically.

That being said, it's good you're slowly being introduced to resistance training. however, throw your 5 and 10 lbs dumbells away. the movements you should be doing are the compounds. squats, deadlifts, bench, pullups, military presses, lunges, rows, incline bench, etc etc. add a couple full body days a weeks of those types of movements with you going to failure in the 15 rep range to start with and you'll be amazed at the progress you'll make. and best of all, you'll start to lose that out of shape cardio bunny look and get to more like your target goal looking toned girl.

Am I understanding this right, you have not lifted weights yet? Meaning you have never consistently trained with weights to try to build muscle?

Umm, you could see OUTSTANDING results from that alone. I really wish I could get permission from my wife to post a few before and after pictures of her. She is now very toned and lean and she does not exercise half as much as you do Jean. She usually works out two to three times per week but she lifts weights every time. She is not big and bulky at all but she is toned and lean. She is down to a size 2 and some of those are even too big on her now.

Getting to a very lean body fat percentage is very tough for anyone who has never been ultra lean but not impossible! You should know by now that you can make it happen if you really want it and are prepared to work your butt off for it.

Thanks for your advice! Up until recently, I never thought weight training was necessary. Now, I know better.

Unfortunately, I don't have any equipment in my home. Would you recommend I join a gym? I've been considering going to a trainer for a while.
Thanks again for your response. :)

You can train with weights at home with a basic set and bench if you want to shell out some money. However, joining a gym and getting a trainer for a short while at least would be beneficial because at least you would get shown how to use the equipment and weights with the proper technique.

To be honest once you know the proper technique, all trainers are good for is motivation.

The only problem I have with any of that... is money. I make very little, and what I do make is quickly spent paying bills and buying gas.

I actually just bought some workout dvds that require weights, and are supposed to help build muscle.

To tell you the truth, that's my best shot right now. I mean, I think it is, anyway.

You can get online and find video demonstrations of various free weight exercises that you can do at home. There are zillions! Make sure you do a few for your lower body and chest and back. Your shoulders and arms will get hit when you work the chest and back, but you can also do a bunch of shoulder exercises (do one for the back of the shoulders, one for the front, one for the sides and one for the top), plus some arm exercises. Just make sure you balance your exercises so if you work your back, then you also do your chest. Doesnt have to be on same day but dont just work one body part and never work the opposing body part. For example, in the legs we have the quads in the front and the hamstrings in the back, the arms you have the biceps in the front and triceps in the back, chest/back. Try reading magazines like Muscle & Fitness for Women or just go online and figure out a nice full body workout.
