Thought I'd better follow the procedure and post one of these!

I'm a 48 year old, 5'2" (very nearly), woman living in Scotland and carrying too much weight for my liking. I was up to 12st 5lbs but am currently down to 11st 10lbs.

I was always quite a comfortable weight and enjoyed weight training and biking for general fitness during my twenties and early thirties. After I had kids though, back then, I piled on a bit of fat. Had great plans to lose it before the first birth but after a caesarian and some complications with illness I could not exercise for a long time. Neither was I so heavy that I panicked about it so I just kept the padding for a lot longer than I realised. Years have slipped by and my 'babies' are now 17 and 13. :p

A couple of years ago I started walking, hard and fast, for exercise, with good results kept things under control anyway and even lost a few pounds. I didn't want to diet specifically though.

However this past year I piled on another stone much to my surprise. I started seriously exercising back in May and also watched my calorie intake, have lost about 6lbs in the intervening time. It's dead slow though and I became frustrated at the barely 1lb a week loss, especially when I found I was plateauing for 3 weeks in June.

Read the information here about 'interval training' and have been giving that a wee try for the past two weeks... great! Lost another pound but it's still slow.

I feel as though perhaps pre-menopausal hormones are hindering my progress (although I've no signs of actual menopause yet ...I don't think). Whatever it is, I'm sure finding weight loss a lot harder now than I did twenty years ago!!

My schedule is a little haphazard. I weight train at home with a bench and free weights around twice a week... any more frequently and I find I don't gain strength. Muscle tone under the fat is pretty good and I can see a lot of improvement in my shape but I am keen to shift that fat on top!! I was walking hard, up hill mostly, for over an hour daily but have swapped that out for the interval training every other day, either walk/run or slow bike/fast bike on an indoor cycle. I am also doing some pilates and bellydancing for flexibility and tone... doesn't help the weight loss much probably but is pleasant to do!

There you go, ramble finished. Any tips and advice or indeed support is greatfully received. Dieting especially since I've not attempted a 'real' diet before. I never liked the idea as my mother was always on diets and got fatter and fatter over the years it seemed!

Hi, I'm 5 years older, an inch taller and my heaviest weight was over a stone more than you. I've shifted 3 stone and am now struggling with the last stone. It doesn't seem to want to budge whatever I do.
I lost the other 3 stone mostly by fast walking and healthy eating.
I went through the menopause and got even fatter and decided that it was now or never and was sick and tired of never having energy or looking nice.
I found that it was important to both eat well and exercise. When I tried stopping one or the other I stopped losing weight.
What was the real factor in this working was changing the chip in my head to wanting a long term healthy lifestyle not being on a diet. If you want to eat something that is not good for you then make up for it some other time. Also it's a real help to weigh your food and keep a journal of everything you eat or drink.
Good luck with losing the rest of your weight.

Thanks. :) Yes, I'm looking to 're-educate' the food intake. I've come to realise that portion size has a lot to answer for. I was talking the other day with a friend and reminiscing about our childhoods on the farm. I suddenly realised that the dinner plates my parents' generation used were a LOT smaller than todays and the portions that even the hard working, and lean, men in the family ate were probably half what we pack away now at dinner. Factor in that we eat more chocolate biscuits as snacks now than good old homemade raspberry jam 'pieces' (sandwiches) that we got then and I see a distinct cause. :p

I've started trying to use one of those free calorie diary webpages (any tips on good ones out there would be appreciated!) but it's a bit slow and clunky so far.

And awesome that you lost so much weight! Well done and I hope you manage the last bit! I'm just setting myself a goal of a stone at a time. So at the moment I'd like to head for 10st 10lbs initially. :)

Keeker's diary.

Not much progress in the last two weeks, sadly. But, not unexpected either. Husband was at home on holiday from work and I was bumped out of my normal exercise and cooking routines. I rather thought that might happen. On the positive side, I didn't gain any weight! Just stagnated a bit. :)

So here we are, a new Monday and I'm back into it. Let's see what I can manage this week.

Hiya!!!

I use MyPlate on livestrong.com which is quite good! It gives you limits and shows you pie charts and all this other cool stuff!

It's amazing how quickly you get used to eating smaller portions and how your tastes change until you actually prefer healthy food. I was saying on one of the other threads that one of my absolute favourite meals was ribs and now the thought of them makes me feel a bit sick.
I'm not stressing about the last bit of weight loss but concentrating more on getting fitter. I've started going to the gym several time a week so at the moment I'm more interested in toning up which stops me stressing about losing weight so slowly at the moment.

Had a look at that thanks, looks interesting but I decided these things just take too long to fill in every day and my family yell at me enough for being on the computer :p

So current status.. down to 11st 7lbs this week. It's excruciatingly slow but it IS at least still coming off! Exercise has been patchy this last two weeks as I keep breaking bits of myself. Strained back/hip muscles on a barbell bent-over row and then strained something rather painfully low down in my left calf muscle when running... let it heal and then promptly did it again on the first time out running again.

I hate not being quite as rubbery as I was in my twenties! :D However, I do still bounce back reasonably quickly so I'll get back to it later this week I hope. I'm still doing the stretching/pilates and all the other weight stuff that I can do that doesn't involve lower back too much until that's completely settled itself.

Schools have gone back here so I'm back at work now too.. hope I can still keep my schedule up and running despite that.

Yes, the changing tastes. Hadn't had a packet of crisps for a treat for over a month and had some salt & vinegar ones yesterday... felt quite sick after them!

I live too far from a gym so I have free weights and a bench upstairs, which I enjoy using.
