Greetings and Salutations!

Greetings to all of you. I'm new here, so allow me to introduce myself and explain why I'm here.

I am a 26-year old male. I'm 5'8", and I weigh a Brobdingnagian 300 lbs, for a BMI of 45.6; this places me firmly in the "morbidly obese" category. Unfortunately, my weight has led to the standard, predictable medical issues: high cholesterol (a family trait, sadly), high blood pressure and incipient asthma. With a family history of heart disease, and a father deceased in his early 40s from a massive coronary, I am incredibly concerned that I may be heading down that same path.

Now, as for a resolution to my problem: I have tried various diets over the years, but, as we all well know, diets never work. I know that I need to make fundamental lifestyle changes to beat this. Here, however, lies my difficulty: I have failed every time I try to make these choices. No matter how successful my weight loss endeavor, I will eventually start backsliding; returning to my previous poor dieting and exercise habits. Strange eating compulsions set in, often in the forms of consuming a massive portion of a horrible "junk" food, such as a bag of chips, or multiple spoonfuls of peanut butter...

Therefore, I've decided to start coming here for support and ideas. Every previous weight loss attempt has been tried on my own, and I feel it is the lack of a support community that has led me to failure every time. There is no external force to be accountable to.

That being said, I would love any advice you folks can provide to help me on the way to better health. My goal is to lose 150 lbs in the next two years - precisely half my current weight. This, of course, requires me to lose 1.5 lbs of weight every single week, a task that seems daunting to me. To those of you who have preceded me on this journey: I would appreciate any advice you have as to weight loss methods and ways to stick with them. What seems to work best for you?

Thank you kindly for reading my story, and I look forward to reading yours.

Welcome! Good questions. I'm new too but one thing I've learned is that you need to start small. Don't bite off more than you can chew or it'll end up being too much for you. Well, that's how it is with me anyway. And small changes can make a HUGE difference in the long run...I'm just trying to make good choices during the day, but it's difficult...Nice to meet you and good luck!

Hi and Welcome!!!
Like littlekeylime said... start small.. such as "This week I'm not going to drink regular pop", Then next week add "I'm going to choose healthier snacks" and build from there.
As far as looking at the daunting task of 1.5lbs per week, every single week... don't get caught up in numbers. Some weeks you are going to drop more weight then other weeks.. it's all going to balance out. Focus on healthy food, moving every chance you get and changing the way you live little by little.
Good luck! I look forward to chatting with you on the boards :hurray:

Exaaactly. Every time I watch the numbers too closely, I get really frustrated and depressed and it kills me. If you're eating smart and exercising, you're losing weight. :D
