Google Earth your hike/run/bike ride

Here is a way of sharing our bike rides / walks/ hikes / runs / jogs from around our little world. It might not be practical for everyone - you need to have Google Earth installed, and be able to understand zipped files. You also might not want to share for security reasons, but here goes:
  1. You need to have Google Earth installed. You can get it free here.
  2. Sign up for an account at Map My Run.
  3. Map your walks, runs. jogs, cycle rides, etc. Save them.
  4. Download the .kmz file/s from that save.
  5. Clicking on any .kmz file should open Google Earth, and take you directly down to your mapped run/ride/hike.
  6. To upload a kmz file to this forum, you will need to convert it to a .zip file, and to attach it via the 'manage attachments' facility.

As an example, I've attached a my most frequent dog-run of recent... Again, to view it, you need to be able to unzip it - (XP for example allows you to do so, or to access the zipped file by clicking onto the zipped folder) and to have Google Earth installed.

that's very cool - it's kinda cool just to play with it to see how far i cover when i'm just running my errands over the weekend

bike rides

That is good to have. I am actually doing a bike ride in May. It is 400 miles over 5 days from Somerset, Ky to Roanoke, Va...It's actually an EMS memorial bike ride. I am psyched about it.

I was playing around withthis some more - tryng to figure out my route from the weekend -and it only seems to do bonafide city streets and not park paths... is there a similar thing out there that does major parks?

Aint Google Earth Great?!?!

I use it all the time now to map out my walks and let me know exactly how far I am going. However the mapping site you listed doesn't show my neck of the woods, being over here in South China. However I did save a screen capture of my neighborhood from google earth. Have a peak and you will see why I love walking in South China. I have 3 HUGE parks on 3 sides of my apartment complex!! Wonderful, beautiful parks filled with paths, benches, lakes, pagodas, trees, streams...etc etc. Gorgeous! Some paths are very moderate some are extremely challenging! The flowers here bloom all year long and there is always something new to see! Have a peak!

Or if you want to see some pics of where I have the absolute good fortune to go walking have a look at my online gallery, as there are a couple galleries in there of pics I have taken on my daily walks.

Even walking home from work everyday (7km) takes me through 2 great parks. For a country with such a massive population I am genuinely suprised and delighted to have so much green space to exercise in.

Soon I will also take some pictures and movies of the fantastic free exercise equipment the government puts everywhere to encourage people to exercise.... I love it and use it almost daily!

Look out skinny, here I come!!!

Google Earth itself will do it

If you go into tools in Google earth there is a great ruler tool that will allow you to exactly map out the distance of your journeys, whether on city street or dirt path. I use it frequently. I love organizing my routes in advance that way. I can see just where I need to go to accomplish my goal for the day. I am not sure how accurate the ruler is, but I assume it is not bad.
