good walking shoes for a heavy person

I just started getting into weight loss, and so far I've lost 10 lbs in about a week (my doctor put me on phentermine).
My question is, does anyone have a good suggestion for walking shoes?
my wife and I go walking through the park, which consists of mostly concrete and some dirt trails every now and then. we probably walk about 2-3 miles when we're out on our walks.
I have a size 13 ft. (wide)
Im currently 346 lbs (down from 356 on monday at the doctors office) and I'm losing more and more each day (for this first week, it's averaging about 1 lb. a day I know that will fade off quickly and the weight loss will slow way down.

Thanks for the help.
Johnny

this question has been asked and answered multiple times for running shoes - same answer applies for walking.

get your butt to a running store -not a self service box store... but an actual running store (check the yellow pages or google) where the employees are trained to watch how you walk/run, see the wear pattern on your current shoes, and suggest an appropraite shoe for you.

In 100lbs or so - get refitted becuase your walk will probavly have changed.

Thanks Maleficent - I was actually wondering the same thing, my right foot runs sometimes when i walk and i just noticed yesterday i'm getting a small blister on my middle toe.. odd they feel fine until i hit like mile three. I will get a new pair as well :)

Thank you for the reply,
However do you know of any specific brands that seem to be one above the other?
I really don't care what they look like as long they are comfy and last a decent length of time.

Thanks,
Johnny

Thanks for that info. Mal..

I was in the hospital Thursday/Friday and one of the issues was RE: my swollen feet/busted varicose veins.
My RA was all messed up and the dr. couldn't believe the shoes I was using.

I thought I was doin' good with my expensive shoes from Academy..

that's why you need to get to a running store..

What's good formy foot might not work for yours..

For years, I was put into New Balance shoes because they carried wide widths... I always had problems with my heels and my arches -my heels would turn in because of my particular walk - the new balance shoes didn't provide the proper arch support - Nikes are a much better fit for me... and I've never had a problem with my heeds and arches since..

Nike
New Balance
Brooks
Asics

are all good brands - whether they are the right shoe for you is dependent on your foot and your walk

My local runnig store, has a rather prominent sign- don't judge a shoe by it's cover... If you're buying a shoe solely by what it looks like or what the latest magazine said was cool -chances are you will have problems - blindfold yourself when trying on theshoes

and the bonus to a running store -most of them (REI does, as does a bunch of local stores) if the shoe isn't right - as long as you haven't run thru mud puddles in the shoe -they will take returns/exchanges on the shoe for a different pair -even if it's been worn (they will use it for "model" shoes that they will have you try out in the store or on the sidewalk...
