Going to give this a try...

Hi everyone!

So I have been poking around this sight for a little while and you all seem very friendly and super motivated so I finally decided to post something!

I am a 21 yr old. Senior in college, pretty stressed (trying to find a job!) and in a little bit of a slump right now.

I am trying South Beach diet, I have been doing it for about 3 weeks, but have been cheating! I'm not sure if it is the right diet for me because you can't have any alcohol and I like going to bars and what not with friends on the weekends. I dread the thought of calorie counting though. I tried that last year and after about 3 weeks of eating the most boring, plain foods and not losing weight I gave up! I'm going to give SB a few months and see how it goes.

I also try to go to the gym everyday since I live about 2 blocks away! I go for about an hour and do 30-40 cardio (treadmill/eliptical) and then weights and abs and leg lifts.

I have always been a pretty active person (I did 2 varsity sports, went to the gym, I play recreational sports for fun...etc.) and I also walk everywhere so I feel like I might have to step up my training and reallllly cut back on food intake. (i've gotten so lazy lately though! eek)

At my highest weight I was close to 180, right now I am about 168. My goal weight is 130.

Any tips or words of wisdom/motivation you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey there!
Welcome to the forums. College can be very stressful and adding exercise can help a great deal with relieving some stress. It kinda sounds like you're adding some stress with what you seem to consider a diet that restricts you from things you enjoy. IMHO I think you should be looking to make a gradual lifestyle change if you find you were overeating, not getting enough exercise or nutrition at a point in your life that caused the weight gain. Doing little things that over time just become habit and part of your daily life. It's gotta be stuff you can stick to in life so the weight loss will stick.
Best of luck and I hope to see you around!

tips? always get back up when you fall, because you will. Set goals and rewards for yourself. I have a necklace that I put charms on for various achievements. Every time I feel like breaking I just grab a hold of it and think "willpower." Its never easy doing what everybody does here, so don't go off thinking you are different lol.

Welcome!

I understand about foods getting boring. I know the start of my diets are always plain and boring. Its the basic, but soon build blocks begin to form and you find new things.

South Beach is pretty popular. I'm sure they have a recipe book out there somewhere. Or recipes online. I encourage you to look some up.

I know being a senior in college and the stress it brings and the last thing you want to do is cook. But there are so many added benefits to cooking.

Good luck!!

Hey everyone thanks for the tips! I actually have found some great easy cookbooks that I asked for for christmas :) Can't wait!

Catsmeow thanks for all the really helpful advice! I am definitely trying to change my ways more than just cutting out carbs and I think the things you have said are definitely really important.

I said reading the Beck Diet Solution and it has been really helpful about changing my mind set of eating and teaching me to think positively. I have definitely been eating more slowly and have been careful not to over eat.

My next goal is 6lbs by christmas and as a reward I will go dress shopping for new years :)
