Going on a diet (can) leave you 5 lbs heavier?

Going on a diet (can) leave you 5 lbs heavier?

This is what I heard on the news a few weeks ago but forgot to post..they say people lose weight but don't keep it off, and actually put on 5 lbs MORE than they started with!

It's called Yo Yo dieting and almost all Americans do it.

You want to lose weight... so you restrict calories. Your lose weight, but you do not know that you are losing muscle and water- NOT FAT (at least not mostly fat).

All you know is that you lost weight. So now you are happy. You start eating "normal" again and before you know it... you gain the weight back PLUS more.

Why? Because your body NEVER got rid of body fat. It got rid of muscle. Eating less also caused your metabolism to SLOW. Now you are eating "normal" again and doing more harm than good.

Lesson- do NOT restrict calories to unhealthy levels. Most of us do not eat enough. 1200 calories is TOO LOW. Your body only knows there is NOT enough fuel for it to continue on. So it stores fat to protect you and keep you warm. Your body doesn't know you are dieting.

It KEEPS fat to keep you safe and warm. Evolution. It instead turns your muscle into glucose (fuel). In essence, you eat your muscle. Hope that helps.

So true!!!! If only people could be educated in nutrition, exercise, weight management, whatever just as we are with other subjects in school, people would be a lot healthier and there would be a lot less frustration.
