Getting started is hardest part for me...

I am trying this part of the forum as I have a very busy schedule and have spent years now trying to do at least some exercise with no results. In a desperate attempt someone recommended trying this forum. Seems like a logical approach, especially because I am on my computer so much working and other.

In another post there is a mention of using a laptop exercise bike. Basically it is a design that puts a laptop at your finger tips with pedals at your feet. This I thought would make sense to get started training / exercise. Some posts thought it would be a waste of time. But the website for the product "spindesk" mentions a study by Mayo Clinic called NEAT. It states that this would work.

My question is does anyone have ideas or any products other than Spin Desk that would be effective to get a exercise program started? Would you recommend this to your clients who have busy work schedules?

Thank you for your thoughts. Diet is another problem area that has its own set of setbacks.
But I have added fish to my diet and that is a good start.

I think the biggest problem for most people is getting started. Once you start then it gets easier. But with being on a computer or wanting to play video games I just think that if I could tie the two together it would be excellent way to self motivate.

Hiring a personal trainer would be nice but the costs just don't fit in. Of course I could logic that the costs of getting sick will far out way it, but if it were that simple everyone would have a personal trainer.

I have started using vacuuming and other daily chores as ways of exercise. But do find this could surely lead to back injury. Tried doing lunges while vacuuming and well better left to the athletes.

How about using treadmill with laptop? Though my knees do not do well with long walks.

I like the thought of this. All this. But it never happens. Of course many have told me to go to gym, workout real hard for an hour, etc.... The million dollar question (by that I mean the majority of people) is what do I do now that can get me to workout without having to change my life. This is why I jumped on the web to get some answers. They are all helpful, like yours to exercise while I do other daily things. According to Mayo Clinic that would be a excellent approach to the biggest problem. If I had the drive to start a real workout program then the whole situation would be different.

My age is 45, weight is 175, 5'10. Look like a pear though. Diet is going well but a whole other issue.

Wouldn't walking outside be the same as using a indoor exercise bike at low rpm?

Life changes are a very good thing :)

I went through what you're going through for a long time. I had an excuse for everything anyone suggested.

The best way to get started is to "fake it 'til you make it," keep telling yourself that fitness is something you're genuinely interested in, something you want to make a hobby. I did this, and within just two months, working out five mornings a week hadn't just become a habit, it has become something I look forward to! I get excited about it! I love finding new ways to get my heart rate up. I've been exercising regularly for about eight months now and I'm only two pounds away from hitting my 50lb loss!!

Also, I know a lot of people who vaccuum and do other chores regularly without back injuries... you'll be okay man.

Thank you - forums make a difference

Thanks Treeluvr87,

Very kind. I am 45 years old and tend to have a feeling like "I have heard it all". Kind of like I know I should but still do not. We are all guilty, just a different degrees.

Then there was the thought that I could exercise while getting on forums, doing work, playing video games. There was a spark. "what if I only do the fun pc / gaming things when I exercise on laptop"?
That spark is now working. Derwyddon is right. I did buy the spindesk. Today I am riding and writing this. I just hit 30 mins. Took that long to go through the planning day, reading email, face book. Amazing how time becomes much more accountable while exercising.

In brief I am excited to continue to explore this site for motivation and what I know works - real people like you making me accountable. Thank you. I will be back. 30 min is enough for now.
