Getting started again

Hello Everyone,
This is my first post, and the latest journey of my life. I just finished 8 weeks of Radiation for breast cancer. I'm now ready to get back into the gym, very ready.
For the past few months I've done nothing as far as excercise due to being tired. I ate everything and anything, and have gained a few pounds, nothing I worry about.
My question is this, my joints are a bit sore, my knees, my hands, and I also get itchy hands and feet that are unbearable. Is it possible that these problems are because of my bad diet? My diet consisted mostly of bread and butter, (my favourite) I did eat more sweet goods than normal. I was nurturing myself and don't regret it, I even ate potato chips:eek:. Could I have arthritis brought on by my delicious behavour?
Oh, I also came off of HRT and don't take any medication. I've excercised and taken care of myself all my life.
I will ask my Doctor in two weeks, meanwhile I thought I should ask the board for any input.
Thanks in advance

You have the right idea talking to your doctor about it. True, some doctors don't know all that much about fitness, but they should be able to help you with what is and isn't contraindicated with your condition.

You know for sure that you can (and should) work on eating behaviors - eating healthy, whole foods.

As for exercise, that one, imo, is a question for your oncologist, and/or a physical therapist. I would think that some basic stuff, like walking, etc wouldn't be a problem. However, since you are experiencing some joint issues, it wouldn't be a bad idea to hold off on wt lifting until you speak with them.

and kudos to you for getting up and back into it!

Re: getting started again

Hi Sephanie,
Thanks for the reply. I do have my Doctors OK to get back into the gym, and, I walked 2 miles today outside, sure glad I did it outside 'cause if I had been in the gym, I would have been so off that treadmill in the first 10 minutes, anyway I did it, tomorrow I'll do some stretches.

I normally eat healthy with the proper kinds of food, I have most of my life, as well as going to the gym or working out.

I was just hoping someone would confirm my pain was coming from my
unhealthy eating, and, lack of movement for the last few months, which I'm inclined to believe.

My family pampered & spoiled me and wouldn't let me do anything, I finally gave in to them as I had no choice, now I'm wishing I hadn't been quite so lazy as I feel this is the cause of my stiff and painful joints. Then again, I was getting boosters of radiation for a week which made me not even want to move due to exhaustion, and I didn't, I stayed in bed all that week after treatments. Now I'm getting back into my old healthy ways again.

I don't know what the side effects of radiation are specifically, but I wouldn't find it hard to believe that aches and pains would come along with it - especially considering the lack of activity it contributed to.

This is just my opinion, but it seems sometimes that people who are into fitness and health, seem to be more aware than others when it comes to how they are feeling. I've often noticed people who couldn't work out for a while due to illness, injury, or life situation say that they just feel off.

It was very wise of you to allow your body to rest and heal during your illness, and likewise, to get back into exercising now that you are able. Just get back in slowly and carefully, avoiding anything that aggravates any pains. If they don't go away, I would have that looked into.

Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a trainer who has dealt with people in your situation before just for some insight and guidance, b/c although you have exercised in the past, things may be different for your body at this point.

Thanks once more for the feed back, So far walking & watching what I eat seems to be helping me, starting to feel good again.
I'm really impressed with this board & the caliber of people, it's wonderful:)
