Getting in shape for a 5 mile race?

Hello,

I used to be an avid runner about two years ago. I ran at least 15 miles a week. Since then, I have gained about 20 lbs. (ouch) that I would like to lose.

I want to run in the Rockland County Turkey trot on November 27, but I haven't run seriously in at least a year and a half. Is it possible for me to get in good enough shape to run this race in two months? Plus, I have a vacation in Europe planned for Nov 2-15, so I have that working against me also. Does anyone have any advice on if this is possible and how I can go about it? I'm a member at New York Sports Club, so at least I have that going for me!

Thanks,
Stacey

For 5 miles, yeah. I bet you could get ready for 5 miles in 2 months. Take a look at the thread that is preparing someone for a marathon and adjust the distances down until you get with something you are comfortable doing. Good luck and have fun! Just take it slow so that you don't hurt yourself, but fast enough that you are up to the 5 mile point in 6 weeks or less.
