Getting Healthy!

Hey guys,

I am somewhat new to this whole weight-loss thing. I never really payed attention to my weight in high school. I did dance classes 5 times a week for the first two years, and stayed relatively fit. Then, after stopping dance, I gained a bunch of weight. I can't say that I really payed attention to it though, or ever really noticed. Fast-forward to a few years later, I was 19, and at my highest weight of 185lbs. On my 5 foot 2 frame, this was relatively huge. Then I met my now-fiance, and was so lovesick (long distance relationship) that I had boundless energy and too many butterflies to eat all day. I dropped down to 150 lbs at my lowest. I was also on birth control pills at the time, which really helped with appetite control.

Then, I stopped the pill out of circumstance. I also wasn't walking as much and due to hormone shifts, was hungry. I gained about 15 lbs. Then.. dun dun dun. I started the Depo shot. Over the past couple of months (From October to Now) I shot up to 178lbs. I don't blame the medication in the shot so much except for maybe a small shift in slowing my metabolism.

Depo made me crave things. It still makes me crave things. Even when I wasn't hungry, I wanted to eat. Plus I had turned 21, and was drinking (not heavily but enough to count).

So a few weeks ago, on April 19th, I turned things around when I saw pictures of me from Easter that made me sad.

I started counting my calories, keeping them around 1200 a day (occasionally if I'm working out harder I'll give myself leeway to 1450). I bought an exercise bike that I'm on at least 2 or 3 hours a day, when I have some free time or while watching TV or shows with the man.

So far, in about a week and a half, I've lost 8 lbs! I'm now down to 171 and at the rate I'm going suspect I'll be down to 168 (the 10 lbs mark) by this Thursday!

I've still got a while to go, but I feel like I'm making sustainable changes- eating healthily and slowly, drinking lots of water, and getting in lots of activity, even if it's light work, every day.

Wish me luck and determination!

And just as an added note so you all know where I'm at- I typically consume less than 1400 calories a day and burn about 800-1300 calories on the bike daily.

Congratulations! That's an awesome start. I tell you, the best part of being a lesbian is not having to take birth control -- I don't think I could handle the cravings! Good on you for making a change, that's really impressive. Do you bike outside as well, or just on the machine?

Haha! I guess that is true, never though of it that way. :rotflmao:

I just bike inside, I'm in Northwestern Texas right now for the remainder of the school year and it's already deathly hot, so just on the stationary bike. It also helps to have the TV right there to keep me entertained while I'm working out because there honestly is nothing going on in this city. In the fall though, it's a different story. I love going for walks outside to look at all the pretty colors and scenery.

I guess I just like something shiny and pretty to look at! Haha. Explained by my ADD.

I don't necessarily diet- I pretty much eat whatever I want, just in moderation to keep my overall calorie count down. But I do make sure that I get a lot of protein and fiber because those are the things that ultimately keep me full and I'd hate to just binge on junk all day and still be hungry at the end of it. I hate being hungry. Surprisingly though, I haven't really had any time that I can distinctly remember being hungry since I started this.

Here's and example of pretty much what I ate yesterday (I have an iPhone so I keep track of my approximate calories and exercise through the FitTracker app):

Breakfast:

Kashi GoLean! Berry Crunch Cereal, 3/4 cup Dry - 180 cals

2 large celery stalks - 20 cals (usually this is some kind of fruit or veg, I just have celery in the fridge right now)

Oikos non-fat Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup with Cinnamon added - 95 cals

Lunch (which varies from day to day because sometimes I'm at school and can't eat lunch):

Either a sandwich, or soup, or a salad, or whatever left-overs happen to be in the fridge. If I'm at school it'll usually be an apple and a Kashi bar. I like Kashi brand cereals because they usually have lots of protein and fiber with not much sugar.

Lunch (if I eat it) usually totals to about 350 calories or so.

Dinner:

Again, varies depending on what I have to cook with. Last night I made Curried Pork chops (seared then baked) with a red wine and tomato sauce over salad. It was quite good. Also about 350 calories.

Snacks are usually things like vegetables with low-fat sour cream ranch dip, fruits, greek yogurt, chips and salsa, chocolate (heehee), and other stuff. Just whatever I feel like. I do have a gnarly sweet tooth though.

Whatever I eat I keep track of and make sure that I stop when I'm full. Tracking really does help, and my phone makes it so much easier.

I've been bad about exercise this week because I've been so busy (end of the semester)! But I've been good about what I've been eating so I've managed to take another pound off down to 170 lbs. 8 pounds in a week and a half! Not bad, huh? I'm hoping that by the end of this week I can be down to 168 for 10 lbs lost in total.
