Getting Back

Hi, I am 15 and a couple years ago I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease. Since then I have been pulled out sports, moved and gone through puberty. I am going to visit with my specialist this week, but I really want to lose weight. Through all of this I went from about 115 pd to 160+ pd. Currently I am about at 155. I don't like to admit I have a condition, or that it affects me, but it does. I have had chronic fatigue, weight gain, arthritis and neurological issues. I am a fifteen year old teenage girl who wants to live to the fullest. I hope that this forum will help give me the support, inspiration and community I need to help me get back to a healthy and fit weight. I am going on a missions trip to Panama this summer where I will be helping to run a soccer camp, and that itself is a big goal. I am going to get a gym membership with my older brother to help. Anyway, guess I needed to get it all out. Thanks!!!!! :)))) (I also want to be able to run the Color Run next year :)

Welcome to the forum.

I am very sorry to hear of your medical condition.

I think that the best thing is to discuss your desire to lose weight with your specialist when you see him this week and ask if there is any special advice regarding diet and exercise which is linked to your medical condition.

I know that for instance my husband has medical reasons for avoiding otherwise healthy things like grapefruit and spinach...

Your fight to lose weight will not be helped by things like chronic fatigue and arthritis - but it is certainly quite possible despite your exercise options being more limited. You need to believe that you can rid yourself of your surplus pounds and live to the fullest.

If you limit your calories so that you burn more calories than you eat you will lose weight.

You can therefore lose weight with limited exercise by being a bit more strict with your food than if you were doing a lot of exercise.

All calories are not equally healthy though so it is important to make sure that you eat lots of nourishing things like protein, fibre, calcium and drink sufficient water.

You do not need to do things like go running for it to be valuable exercise though. If you can manage to go walking - that is a wonderful form of exercise... It was the main form of exercise that I used when I lost a lot of weight. It doesnt even have to be power walking - any walking is good for you.

If you can get a gym membership - that would be brilliant. I am sure that there will be helpful people at the gym that will be happy to suggest exercise ideas too. Always bear in mind the advice of your specialist - he is the expert in your condition.
