G'day newbie here

Hi, my name is Mike, I'm a recent 41 yr old ex-smoker who who smoked for 25 yrs before waking up one fine morning and asking myself what was I doing to myself, I've always been into fitness nonetheless, I windsurf in the warmer months, moutain bike and ski in the colder months, but now that I have quit those awful things I was smoking, I need to gain muscle mass and rid myself of the fat my body has accumulated since my quit and freedom into a smokless life,, I also need help from those of you who may have taken the same steps in their lives that I am about to take, how best to begin with free weights and which cardio trainning would suit me best, I'd like to thank all those in advance who will halp me through this new life I have chosen for myself, Thank you

Mike

Congrats! BIG STEPS THERE...

About the other steps you wanted to take, what cardio is best for you??

You seem to have be fairly sporty/active, so if you belong to a gym I would suggest you check out a spin class or two, tons of fun, major energy rush and just a teensy bit more invigorating than an aerobics class (depends of course on the instructor etc.) The best part is you can really do this at any level, because the bike's resistance is up to you, and if you begin to feel like you can't quite keep up the pace you simply slow down and turn down the resistance until you feel better.
Also, the easiest thing to do is start walking until you feel up to something else (or stick with walking, nothing wrong with that!)

Play around a bit in the forum and check out some programs already laid out for others here.

To start with free weights, take a couple months to condition, lifting what you can comfortably and properly around 12 times/reps. Then you can move to lower reps, higher weight if you want. Back to the gym question, if you belong to a gym most should be able to provide someone to help you be sure you are doing the exercises properly. If not, get online and check out some of the sites with exercises with pictures etc.

Good luck!
