Gasman's Journey to Fitness

Well g-man, you have got better reserve than I had last night. I had resort to a 225 calorie day to make up for yesterday's excesses.....really. Nibbling on frickin' radishes like a rabbit.....

The good and the bad

So I had a good day today, ate according to my plan and ran my fastest 5km so far 32:05, I hope to shave another minute off this coming week, hopefully by the end of May I'll be under 30 minutes and looking to extend my distance.

I weigh in on Sunday, I really hope that I will be under 305, I have my fingers crossed.

Now for the Bad,

On wednesday my wife was thinking about baking a chocolate cake, but decided against it because she knows that I'm trying to avoid those kinds of food and I have absolutely no will power and would probably end up eating the whole cake in a couple of days.

I found a recipe for "chocolate cake in a mug" that you make in the microwave, My wife and I decided to give it a try and split the cake. the recipe is below:

4 tbsp flour
4 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
1 egg
3tbsp skim milk
3tbsp canola oil

mix in a mug and microwave for 1:30

I didn't think it could be worth that much calorie wise, but I plugged the ingredients into eatracker.ca and it was a whopping 780cal (so about 390 cal per serving for my wife and I).... Holy Crap!!

So turns out my wednesday may have been a little off on the calorie count, but I'm pretty sure that I still ran a deficit.

I think I've found some modifications that I am going to try next time the urge hits:

Gasman's Chocolate cake in a mug:

4 tbsp flour
4 tbsp splenda for baking
2 tbsp Cocoa
1 egg
3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp apple sauce

This should knock the calories back to 125cal per serving. I'll let you know how it tastes next time I make it.

Weigh in day - Week 2

Just ran my best 5km -- 31:15, thats a full 50sec faster than my previous best that I ran on Friday... Yay for me.

I was a little liberal with my eating this week, but I did my best to stay the course and I am happy with my performance over the week.

It's weigh in day and the results are in:

Starting Weight Sunday April 18: 314lbs
Current weight Sunday May 2nd: 304.1 lbs
Last weeks Loss: 4.4lbs
Total Loss: 9.9lbs

still eating well. I am using a free ipod app to track my calories the name is lose it! I would recommend it, there is a huge database of foods, and you can enter in custom foods if your food isn't in the list.

I missed my run yesterday as I was out for a business dinner, but I ran today 5km in 31:22, and I had a small victory at the restaurant. I ordered chicken souvlaki which comes with:

All you can eat salad bar
Equivalent of 1 chicken breast
1 cup rice
1 cup Greek Salad.
Garlic Toast.
All you can eat dessert bar

I had some marinated veggies and about 1/4 cup of potatoe salad from the salad bar.

I ate the chicken, about 2/3 of the rice, about 2/3 of the greek salad, and I didn't touch the greasy garlic toast or the dessert

I'm proud of myself, the old me would have had a dinner plate of salads, cleaned the entree plate, and then went up for at least three pieces of dessert.

Next Sunday is Mother's Day, My wife's first Mother's day as a matter of fact. We're planning on going out for brunch or lunch that will be the next test.

I consumed about 2300cal, my Calories out were about 4100cal (3500 BMR + 600 exercise)

It's hump day...

Back on track as far as exercise goes. Since I skipped Monday I ran both yesterday and tonight. Completed my 5km in 31:17 tonight, so I think I've legitimately broken the 32:00 minute mark.

Today I consumed about 2300 calories.

BMR= ~3500 calories
Exercise = ~ 600 calories

Today's deficit: 1900 calories

If I keep this up, I think I could potentially break the 300lb mark this Sunday.

I have my fingers crossed.

Friday, two days to weigh in, still hoping that I'll make it under 300 on Sunday.

We're going for Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday. Big Fancy Buffet, everything you can imagine, Anyone have any ideas for surviving. If I keep it around 800-1000 calories I'll call it a win.

On to today's day.

I consumed about 2300 cals and my estimated output is in the 4100cal range, so I ran another substantial deficit.

And the big news... I ran 5km in 30:21 sec today... Woo hooo!
This past week, I've been getting faster and faster. If I get it below 30min for 3 times in a row, I will tack on some extra mileage.

See you on Sunday.

Success!!!

Weighed in today at 298.7 for a total of 5.4lbs lost this week, and the first time in a year that I have been below 300.

I had a successful weekend away from home. yesterday we ate lunch and dinner on the road. We stopped at an allday breakfast joint for lunch, and I ate ordered two poached eggs, hashbrowns and rye toast. I left half of the hashbrowns and one slice of toast on my plate (That is unheard of for me).

For dinner we ate at Subway, I had a footlong roasted chicken breast on 9-grain with no cheese, lots of veggies and mustard and sweet onion sauce, and 2 cups (half chocolate, half skim milk)

At the brunch buffet this morning I ate:

*1 omelette (I am guessing a two egg, hard to tell it was "one ladel of egg") with shrimp, peppers, onions, and mushrooms - no cheese,
*1 scoop of scrambled eggs,
*small piece of smoked salmon,
*2 king crab legs,
*1 cup of hasbrowns
*small block of havarti cheese,
*piece of banana bread
*pineapple, and strawberries
* small corner of rice crispie square in the chocolate fountain

Now that I write it all out it was a bit of a pig fest... but it was both lunch and breakfast, and came in around 1300cals

My total for today was 2300cal

I also ran 5k Time: 30:10s

Feels good right now, I can't wait to see 275 on that scale.

gasman fellow canadian here as well. from the east coast though.

You have mad dedication and after reviewing your log I am going to take the slow and steady route. Big guys like us can have a huge week of losses if we have a great week and I am sure we will both see consistent results.

I am going to start posting my meals soon.

keep on trucking buddy.

Hey Brutesquad,

You just need to do what works for you and the route I'm taking is working for me so far. I look forward to following along. The great part about being big, like you said in your thread, we don't have to cut that many calories to lose a significant amount of weight, meaning we can still include things like chocolate milk, cheese, pasta, etc, the key is knowing how much we're eating and making sure that we stay under our "budget"!

I still consider myself from the east coast, even though I've been transplanted in Alberta, but I am originally from Newfoundland.

Good Luck

G

Two more good days.

Ate well the last two days.

I ate 2300 cal on Monday and went for my scheduled run (5km 30:22)

Today I ate 2000 cal and even though it was a "walk" day I decided to go on a leisurely jog with my wife. I ran 5km in 35:00 but the kicker is that this time I was pushing a stroller.

Wow does that add an extra dimension to the exercise. Try running without moving your arms, its hard!!

Anyways that means I've tallied an 1800cal and 2200cal deficit on Monday/Tuesday respectively. I might have to add some calories back into my diet.

I feel great, not hungary at all, and I'm losing at a good pace. I'm still eating at least 2000 cal/day, I think I will have to keep eating the way I am until I stop seeing progress then I will re-evaluate.

Well Wednesday was a bit of a slide.

I ate about 2800-3000cal mostly due to the deliciously calorie dense beef stew that I made for dinner - wow... didn't realize how bad that was going to be until I had extra, and then entered the recipe into the ipod.... oops.

Oh well I still ran a deficit.

I went for my 4th run in a row, 5km 30:45, (a little slower that recently, but it was my fourth day in a row.

all in all I consumed worst case: 3000cal

I would have burnt about 4100cal so that still leaves me 1100cal deficit which is still on track for 2lbs/week, I'll try to be more conservative today... I really like the string of 5lb weeks I've had, but I guess those will have to come to an end eventually.

Awesome work GMan,

I took a look at mapmyrun.com and was fiddling around and found some upcoming "courses" I am going to test myself with.

My biggest problem is my sleep schedule is so out of wack. I work 4pm-1am and can never wind down before 5am meaning I sleep wakeup 1 hour before work and just go to work. The goal is to be up before noon go for a run and then go to work.

I havent weighed myself lately but I know I'm down a bit.

You're doing great, and I'm sure that dense stew you made was delcisous and not all that bad for you.

Wow brutesquad, that is a terrible shift, I don't know if I could handel it. I did shift work at a gas plant once (12 hour nights and days) and I thought that was hard enough

I'm glad that your making progress.

The stew was delicious, and had lots of veggies and good stuff, I am married to a dietitian and she thought it was healthy enough but because it was so rich it was an "occasional food" not an "everyday food"

I snuck in a weigh in on Friday, just cause curiosity got the best of me. I should have stuck with my plan, the scales show a 2lb GAIN. but no to worry there were a couple of factors that were different (time of day and clothing come to mind). I'll weigh again and see how I do on Sunday. Hopefully the sunday weigh in will reveal a loss. I feel like I have eaten fairly good, and have been exercising, I was hoping for another 4 lb week, but I'll be happy with 2.

I ate 2500 cal yesterday (4100 expended)
and have eaten 2200 today (3500 expended)

fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Not as much as I had hoped, but in the right direction.

After the 5km run this evening I weighted in at 295.6lbs, thats a little over 3lbs lost this week, not quite a 5lb week, but good nether the less, considering I had a few higher calorie days.

Phew! It was hot out today. Made the run extra hard.

Did my 5km in 31:45 not my best time but I'll make excuses and blame it on the weather.

Ate 2350cals today.

Breakfast: 390cal
Lunch: 625cal
Dinner: 590cal
Snacks:740 cal

Thats all for today, tomorrow is a day off from running. I will however get in my 5km walk.

Not much new happening here.

Yesterday I ate 2100cal and went for a 5km 55minute walk

Today I've eaten 2000cal but have plans for another 2-300cal before bed, but I went for another 5km run.

I FINALLY beat 30:00. I ran the 5km in 29:35...

Some on this forum have been measuring success by the scale, and some by inches, I've been losing weight, but I think I feel best about the improvement of my fitness level. I would really like to get to a place where I can participate in high intensity sports without gassing after 10 minutes (squash, hockey, soccer etc.)

I think I'm in the right direction, now... just not to get distracted.
