Gaining Weight Question

Hey Guys,

Just joined the site after being a viewer for quite some time. I am tall and thin 21 years old, 6'3, 160-163 lbs and am dying to gain weight. I havnt worked out in a while but am getting back into it this week. Do you guys have any suggestions on what food I should be eating as well as what supplements I should get?

I was thinking about a weight gainer/protein, creatine as well as some protein bars. I am not home that much throughout the day and am forced to eat out a fair bit so Its tough to always eat perfect but I want to try and do my best thats why I was thinking weight gainer/protein shake for morning and after workout then a protein bar or pre made shake for in the middle of the day and then creatine for after workout.

What do you think?

Forget about the suppliments for a while and focus on calorie requirements, a weight gainer will only make you gain weight if you're in a calorie surplus to start with, it doesn't contain any magical calories that only get used for weight gain (plus, they are generally just packed full of sugar and not exactly good nutrition unless you're malnourished to start with).

My instinct would say that you need to aim for about 3,000 calories a day would help you gain weight. Once you have that in mind then you can look at any suppliments you want to take. Protein powder is a good option post workout and I often take protein shakes in the morning and before bed too.
Creatine won't do much for weight gain other than maybe retain water and I think protein bars are often expensive and ineffective.

Anyway, my point is that for weight gain you just need to look at calorie intake. You then need to look at protein, fat and carb intake to provide your body with suitable nutrients for muscle development

Eat!

Yeah man i was working with a guy who was taller then you and weighed less!!! He wanted to do the same thing too. The biggest change he had to do was eating. I think he started eating about 3k calories but we bumped him up a little more because he was not seeing enough gains. It was a slow process but he ended up gaining over 10 lbs in a little over 7 weeks.

Dont completely look the other way with gainer sups. They can work and they are convenient but you do have to watch the calories and make sure that the weight your gaining is not just fat weight.

From the way you talk i would assume that you have been a lean guy your whole life. This means that you proablably have a very fast metabolism which means you will have to work hard and eat lots...but clean at the same time. Dont think about eating more calories as in eating an extra slice of pizza. Think of it as adding another chicken breast, veggie and brown rice meal....or something of that sort.

hope this helps!

get into a good routine and start a healthy diet. Increase your portions and take a protein shake with every meal and you should start to see some results.

I agree; increase your protein ratio to at least 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight and you should start to see your weight slowly increase.
