From My Couch To A 5K... And Beyond!

Hey Tyly. Don't worry too much about the break. I think you will be fine. I ran at the gym today and I was a bit worried because I had been MIA from the gym for a number of days (not 2 weeks though :) ) I ended up running my ass off and it felt great, I wasn't even that fatigued as it got closer to the end....

Carb fest sounds fun. I've been eating these whole grain bagels recently and noticed that they are great fuel for me if i eat them about an hour or so before a run :) One time last summer I ate two brownies a couple hours before I ran and felt like I could run for days :hurray: it was so nice...

Have a great nite,
Sam

Thanks for stopping in guys!

Claud, you may be right about resting on Friday. I will go for 3 miles tomorrow, then see how I feel for Thursday and Friday. I may run 2 miles on Thursday, then rest up on Friday.

Hi Sexy Sammy! Bagels and brownies, huh? I may give those some thought... :) They both sound so good!

I didn't take 2 weeks off of everything, just 2 weeks off of running. Dumb, dumb, but what am I gonna do? :) I just got too cocky, but I have definitely learned my lesson.

I know I can still run it, it just won't be as easy as it could have been!

I'm back in hardcore mode again, and it has been nice. I never stopped working out, it just wasn't as intense as before. Until this week, I didn't realize I missed the feeling of sweating profusely and being exhausted after a workout!

Update: My legs were pretty exhausted today, so I only did 2 miles. I made myself run at a faster than normal pace, so it was nice to break a new personal record! I will see how my legs feel tomorrow and decide what to do then.

The big day is finally here!

I am really nervous, and I don't know why. I know I can run the 3.1 miles, so I don't know what it is... first time jitters, I guess!

Anyway, wish me luck!

I am hoping for 36/37 minutes. I'll (of course) keep you all informed!!!

I have to brag for a second.

I don't know why it is just now dawning on me how amazing James is being about this whole 5K thing.

He is not a guy who enjoys traveling. At all. Especially with gas prices being the way they are right now. The 5K is 45 minutes away from where we are, and I have to be there at 7:30 am. So not only does he have to drive me there on a Saturday morning, he also has to leave home at 6:30 am on a Saturday morning! We are going to drive the 45 minutes to get there, I run the race in ~35 minutes, then we drive the 45 minutes back home! And not once has he complained. If fact, it has been just the opposite! He has been asking how I am feeling, telling me to make sure I get enough carbs/sleep the night before, and just been all around encouraging the entire time! After every run he always asks how it went, he always checks to make sure nothing hurts (I was getting a blister), and he's always telling me how proud he is. It's such an amazing feeling to have my own personal cheerleader - in a manly way, of course! :)

I'm just so lucky to have him.

Oh my gosh this is tooooo sweet:beating: You guys sound absolutely perfect together!! Good luck to you Daisee!!! You will do just fine, of this I am sure. All of this training will pay off :grouphug:

So James and I left really early, and again, he was a great sport about it!

We get there, and it was COLD! There I am in my shorts and t shirt freezing cold! It was windy, and the sun was barely out! Brrrr!

The first thing I had to do was go to the registration counter and exchange my shirt. Thankfully they let me switch my large for a medium, and it fit much, much better! Needing a smaller size is always a good thing! After that I had to go pick up my "time chip", which was actually some weird plastic thing I had to tie to my shoelaces. It apparently kept track of my time according to my number somehow. They took it off my shoe as soon as the race was done.

Anyway, my race didn't start until 8:45, so we were stuck waiting in the cold wind for almost 2 hours! We tried to make the best of it. We watched the presentations, watched some ladies do jazzercise, and pretty much froze our butts off. Finally it was time (or so we thought)!

We walked over to the start/finish line. The 1 mile people went first, so we were stuck waiting some more! Finally some 1 milers started crossing the finish line, so the 5Kers crowded in the street. As we were waiting, I looked around at all the 5K runners, and you know what? I actually felt like I belonged. I didn't look out of place, I didn't look out of shape, no one would look at me and think, "What on Earth is that girl doing trying to run a 5K?"... I actually fit in with all the runners, and that was an amazing realization! We waited and waited and waited for the last of the 1 milers.

When they finally all finished, they blew the horn, and we were off!

It was the most amazing thing! People were lined all along the streets blowing horns, whistling, yelling, and cheering us on! I felt like such a rockstar! It was the greatest feeling to be part of it all. They were cheering for me, too!

The trail we ran was beautiful! I couldn't have asked for anything nicer! We ran along a river, and there were no hills! Much better than the hilly neighborhood streets I usually run!

I was getting pretty frustrated to see people passing me, but I never stopped. Not even once. I ran the whole thing, and it was nice to run past people that had not too long ago passed me, because they had to stop to walk!

There were people giving out water in small dixie cups, but I wouldn't even stop for that. I was bound and determined to do the best I could.

I went into it hoping to finish it in 36/37 minutes. I had only run a full 5K once before, and it took me 37:29.

As I was running, I would check my Nike+ for my pace every now and then. I knew I was going a bit faster than usual, so I had changed my goal to 35 minutes.

Finally... finally I could see the finish! It was a way off, but I could see it! Again, I could hear all the horns, whistles and cheers! It was at that moment when it all hit me. As I got closer and closer, and heard the cheers getting louder and louder, I felt the tears well up in my eyes. I had actually done it! Then as I approached, I could hear James in my head saying, "Finish strong!", so I picked up the speed.

I looked over, and I saw him at the finish line. I saw him jump when he saw me, and I saw the huge smile on his face. I could clearly see just how proud he was, and that was it. A few tears fell.

Then a few more fell when I saw the time I finished in...

32:00!!!!!!!!

Way faster than I had anticipated!!!!!!

I can't even begin to describe how good all of it felt! I blew my old time out of the water, and James was more proud of me than I had ever seen. People were screaming and cheering, and I was on top of the world!

James rushed over to me and hugged me. I shed a few more tears. A guy I made small talk with while waiting saw me and asked if I was ok... Was I ok?! I had never been better!

This was the most amazing day of my life, and I am definitely hooked. I can't even put into words all of the emotions I felt!

Congratulations on your 32:00 time Tyly and on the amazing run you did! I am so proud of you, and I know everyone else here will be too! You are such an inspiration!!!! :hurray::cheers2:

Tyly

Wow! What an amazing first 5k. You've inspired me to go for it. I'll have to find one around here. I'm sure they have it somewhere just about every weekend. Really, really great for you.

32 minutes!! You are soooo fantastic!:party:

I almost cried reading about you crying at the end. :D James is a doll. I'm glad he's being so supportive of you. :)

Ok, you've really got me inspired now. I am definitely getting my lazy arse out running tomorrow. :D

Do you or James get into hockey? I'm watching Dallas v San Jose in 2OT atm. My Red Wings are gonna play the winner in the next round. :D

I truly can't thank all of you enough for your encouragement and support! I wouldn't have been able to do it without all of you!

I have found a cool site where I got my new training schedule. It is supposed to improve my 5K speeds and help prepare me for a 10K!

I have already looked into more 5Ks, but unfortunately the next one I can find in the area isn't until July! I'm not giving up, though! Hopefully another one will come along sooner than that!

Just think how nervous you were when you ran your first 5 minutes or 8 minutes too. =) It's awesome that you are continuing on and going for a 10K. I think I'll do what you are doing. Although I'm not sure I could go straight from running 3.1 miles to running 5 miles YIKES!!!!! :ack2: Good luck on that, and I say continue updating in the C25K section too if you want! :hurray:
