Former athlete TRYING to get it back together

Hello everyone,

My name's Justin. I'm 30, 6'1" and currently weigh 265 lbs, so overweight for sure! I work as an environmental scientist, so spend some time at work moving around, but for the most part am sitting. Over the year weight has caught up with me and I've become very unhappy with myself because of it.

Though I was heavy as a kid, for many years I was a healthy weight. In high school I joined the rowing team and within 2 months dropped probably 40 pounds. For 6 years in high school and college I rowed every day and despite I hefty dose of partying and horrible eating habits, I stayed pretty fit. I had tons of energy and when not rowing I loved bodyboarding, rock climbing, hiking, rafting, kayaking and just about anything else outdoors. I took a desk job as a GIS analyst after college and my weight started going up. I went back to school for my Masters and got it back in check a bit since I was in the field a lot for research, but now out of school again I've really packed the pounds on.

Recently I've improved my diet some and continue to work on it, but find myself struggling to find time and energy to work out. Working multiple jobs, stress, the need for sleep (can't seem to run on 4-5 hours anymore!), and other excuses all get in the way. I still row recreationally 2-3 times a week and also occasionally find time to lift, go for a jog, or pop in a P90x video. I'm just not seeing much success.

So I thought I'd join up and look for advice or inspiration. Hope to talk with some of you!

Hi Justin. I plugged you weight, height and age into my total energy expenditure calculator. I used activity level of 1.5 which is light exercise 1-3 days per week. I calculate that you need 3662 calories per day for maintenance. You need to alter your diet to create an energy deficit of 500 calories per day. You will lose a pound per week if you can stick with this. I would not give up sleep to exercise. That will create more stress, which will sabotage your efforts. I would keep the activity where it is, maximize sleep, and alter the diet for weight loss. I hope this helps.

Hi my name is Kristy and I am a 39, almost 40 year old who recently began a NEW Challenge, to lose 25 lbs over the next 90 days. I also am challenging myself to work out atleast 3 days a week, I want to run after the 90 Days. I had a total hip replacement a year ago so I haven't ran since I was a kid. When I was a kid I was a cheerleader and all that good stuff, however I couldn't keep it up because of my hip. But.... NOW I can and have DECIDED I wanted to get back in shape... Best of luck to you and if you ever need encouragement or ideas feel free to ask
Kristy
