Foot pain, cheap shoes?

Okay so my main dilema is that when im running on the treadmill or going hard at the elliptical i'll be forced to stop because i get such bad pains in my feet. Mainly its a pain down the sides of my feet which then spreads to my balls and heels.

The shoes i wear to the gym are rather cheap and only cost $15 from payless. I'd be happy to invest in better quality shoes if i could find out if thats the problem.

I am still heavy weighing in at 218 pounds so i know there's a possibility that i just have to deal with the pain until i lose more weight, but i just wondered if anyone else had the same issue.

I bought some in-soles and tried to see if they would help but they didn't do much, and sure enough after about 20 minutes of intensive cardio i found my feet burning in pain.

i searched for another thread like this but couldn't find one so thought i'd ask anyway :)

hmm

I weigh about 140lbs and I had some trouble myself. I walk with a slight lean there is some proper terminology for it, like over pronation or something. Anyway I found a place in my town and they watched me walk barefoot and suggested I get some asics gel stability shoes. There are several different types of shoes for different feet problems. I suggest going to a running shoe store or something and figure out what shoes will be best for you.

when you're running, you're putting some serious impact onto your feet... you really want to be wearing shoes that support your foot well...

Payless is fine for the wear them for 15 minutes to look ok for an event and who cares if your feet are uncomforable the rest of the time but for running - get good shoes...

And I'd seriously suggest going to a running store and get properly fitted for a pair of shoes -what works for person a might not work for you - because you might have a slightly different walk or arch o whatever -most better running stores (and you honestly don't pay any more for the shoes than you would at a discounter - ok more than you would at payless but ..) will have employees trained to watch your walk and fit you in approprioate shoes -and most offer a return policy if the shoe isn't the right one.

okay thanks for the help mal :) Yeah i know payless isin't great for shoes but i bought them when i first started going to our local gym cause they were cheap and comfy and until recently when ive started improving my fitness and working harder they were fine. I bought a new pair 3 weeks ago for $40 and they hurt my feet so badly i resorted back to my original pair. One problem is that one foot is half a size bigger than the other so i often have trouble finding good pairs.

I googled running shoe stores in my area and there are none that specialize in them, but tomorrow i'll go to some of th sports stores that have a "limited stock" of special running shoes and try to speak to someone.

i gasp at $80 running shoes normally but if im serious about weightloss which i am i don't mind spending a good amount on a good pair of running shoes that will last me a while and relieve my pain :)

thanks again for the advice! and nice to meet you !

a good pair of shoes will last anywhere from 3-500 miles depending on how you walk or run... your weight isn't overly high so you'll probably go closer to 500 miles...

you've got one pair of feet - they aren't replacable - you need to take care of them... :) and if you're feet feel good -you'll be able to do a lot more..

Yes indeed :) I know i can run for longer so hopefully when i find a good pair of shoes i'll be able to up my fitness level and boost this weight loss!

I have been thru many a pair of running shoes. My feet are weird to begin with... Right now I have like 3 different pairs. The ones I got most recently are a pair of Asics with the Gel Technology. I love love love these shoes. They are specially designed to work with the type of feet I have (pretty flat). They are also a 2E wide, which helps too. These Asics have been much kinder to my feet than my Nikes or New Balances ever were...

Good Luck,
Sam
