Hey all,

So I just recently found out that not only am I allergic to olive oil (maybe other oils as well), but I'm also allergic to butter. I break out in hives and get all itchy.

I LOVE sauteing veggies and other things. What would be a good substitute? (Please don't say water lol).

Gosh allergic to olive oil that's terrible. There are many other vegetable oils you can use.

I like peanut oil. But there is a whole raft of oils. These oils are essentially different from olive oil and butter but i wonder if you might also develop an allergy to veg oils as well. Vegetable oils are polyunsaturated - which is good.

Sesame oil is delicious and is probably the yummiest oil for sauteeing. Best for asian flavours. Peanut oil is less strong flavoured.

I've never heard of anyone being allergic to these things before.

There are good oils in nuts and avocado.

A lot of meats can be grilled.

How come you've only just found out about your allergy? Is it a new thing?

Perhaps a margarine? When I have to use a fat like that- and I'm not using olive oil, or a low calorie cooking spray (derived from sunflower oil)- I use Flora, which is based on canola (aka rapeseed)

Well... canola is the first substitute I can think of. There's also Avacado, peanut, grapeseed. Margerine could work depending on the ingredients - I'm not entirely sure what all goes in there, I think maybe soybean oil?

I guess it's a matter of trial and error to see what you're allergic too in addition to olive oil & butter. :/

Thanks!

I never used to use olive oil to cook until I heard about the benefit and that's when I found out I was allergic to it :-(. I would use margarine, but it contains trans fat.

The reason I think I'm allergic to butter is because I broke out in hives after going to the gym. All I had eaten before that was an apple, oatbran with raisins, and a dollup of butter in that. I've eaten those foods before, except without the butter. Maybe it was the mixture of things, but I don't want to go through that itchyness again.

The other oils might be a go!! I'll def. try canola and peanut oil first :).

Thanks for the advice

I've done a little bit of Googling, and apparently Flora contains less than 0.5% trans fat. Given the amounts you use (not much, it is a fat after all), that's hardly anything.

(Edit to add: I'm not a Flora shill, it's just what I've always used, and it's a versatile option with more poly- and mono-unsaturated fats than a lot of other spread/ oil options)

I meant to say any of the polyunsaturated oils. Ie any vegetable oil. There are so many you can use. None of them are bad for you as far as i know.

If you lived in Australia you wouldn't have to worry about transfats. We don't have them very much.

Have you not discussed it with a doctor. I would if i were you. I was just reading about olive oil allergy. They didn't mention hives as a reaction but a bunch of other things.

There was this allergy website i found. Are you allergic to other things too?

There will be oils in a lot of canned and processed foods. I'd say that most of it will be vegetable oils though so you should be right.

I'm actually going to the doctor tomorrow! I really appreciate the feedback everyone :).

Glad you are doing this. Let us know how it goes. We can all learn something useful from other people's experiences. I had never heard of butter allergy before you mentioned it.

The milk proteins present in butter are the reason behind the allergic reaction. People with milk allergy can develop butter allergy as similar proteins are present in both these products.

Symptoms of Butter Allergy:

•Hives
•Rashes
•Abdominal bloating
•Abdominal cramps
•Diarrhea

I get hives :-(. In small amounts butter can be okay and the itch is bearable, but if I workout it becomes much more pronounced (I love to workout).
