Flyer's diary

flu season ... on steroids this year... it looks like the coronavirus is going to get worse before it gets better. one thing i heard on the news this morning is a health tip i have followed all my life. i'm not a Jack Nicholson in "As Good as it Gets" OCD-type, but i do wash my hands quite often. always before eating and always after returning home. one change i've also made after discovering this in a pumpkin video... i now even wash vegetables and fruits that i might peel or cut/ scoop out (like carrots, avocados, melons, etc). if there is any bacteria on the surface, as soon as you cut in, that knife blade is transferring that, albeit narrow, sliver cut into the part you are going to eat. a small step of washing off first will be worth it. i must admit, i do not wash mushrooms, but i'm always aware when cooking with them and rarely eat them raw anymore.

using salsa (i've been mixing equal parts of green and red) as a dip for raw cauliflower and broccoli ... holy cow..! why have i never thought of this before...!? unfortunately, logistically it doesn't work well with carrots.

I was horrified at Uni by how many students don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom, let alone keeping themselves safe from other infections.

Yes, one good thing about the current coronavirus fuss is that it's bringing back into focus all sorts of basic health practices which have slipped over recent decades, including hand-washing. Antibiotics were/are great, and I'm glad I grew up in an era where they were around and effective, but they've left a lot of people with unrealistic ideas of what medicine can do, how long it "ought" to take to get over things, and so on.

Well, that depends on the dexterity of the dipper! :p

That is great advice, I have been practicing it for about a year now and so far no colds, no flu. Probably some cause and effect there. I have also heard that most folks don't wash long enough. A trick is to hum or think the happy birthday song whilst washing, one verse is about long enough.

Had not thought of washing veggies before pealing, but I can see the logic.

I also like salsa as a dip, even for carrots, the salsa lasts a lot longer with carrots.

i've been on a soup kick recently. i know it's relatively easy to make broth & stocks, but i've been picking up some of these boxed versions. their shelf life is huge, so i can always keep some handy to use. and with chicken for some reason being so cheap recently... every other time i go shopping it seems to be either a 2:1 deal or $0.99/lb... i cook up a bunch and then chop and freeze a few baggies full. again, always close on hand to throw in and make some chicken based soup. break up a bit of angel hair pasta and add practically any vegetable and i've got the main part of two meals for my day.

I am so glad I look at pics like this & feel almost sick. It really does not appeal to me. *phew*

...Did you eat it?
no... i'm not ever sure where i'd get one.

...but breaking it down. Pana Chocolate is a very organic chocolate with no added sugar. ... there is a bit of fruit. ... but ok, that does look like a scoop of raspberry fudge ripple ice cream. ... on top of pancakes?

i once had a dessert at a NYC restaurant called "Death by Chocolate". maybe 30 years ago now, but i still remember it. so i suppose if i were ever in a position to try something like this... especially with the gold cutlery... :)... and considering where something like that would even be on the table... pretty sure i might give it a try.

one benefit of retirement i enjoy this time of year is the freedom from having to support my friend's & bosses daughters with their yearly carbohydrate distribution ploy...

i've been contemplating the use of "Added Sugars" when it comes to cookies. can you really say it's ADDED sugar? isn't suger the essence of cookies? i could see it being used if it was a cracker.... but not a cookie.

If total sugars = 7 grams, and added sugars = 6 grams, what's the other 1 gram?

(And yes, I think those cookies are sitting on two sugar cubes. If you've got it, flaunt it, I guess!)

Girl Scout cookies bring back bad memories for me, eating several boxes at a time... in support of the girls. Better to just contribute cash, I think Girl Scouting is a great thing, but wish they'd find another way to raise money.

Speaking of added sugars, if you buy "sugar-free" gum, it says zero sugar, but the added sugar is non-zero. Sounds like just another loophole bought and paid for by the food industry.
