Fitness Product Designer

I am an industrial design student (product design) in my final year of school. I am currently selecting a thesis topic within the field of fitness. Although I have my own ideas about changes that could be made within the fitness industry, I need to look at the marketplace on the whole. What areas do people feel need to be addressed? What is missing from yor experiences at the gym/ pool/ sports event etc? Is there a piece of equipment you've wished existed? Is there anything you'd like to add or change? How do you get/ stay motivated? How do you keep track of your progress? What do you think about cardio machines, free weights and weight machines? What about services offered? What about children? People with weight problems: overweight/ underweight? Relationships and fitness, men, women? Competitors, bodybuilders?
Please write to me with any comments, ideas, thoughts, advice, feedback... it will all be useful!
Thank you.

Train hard and heavy, avoid machines, free weights. Fitness is a way of life not "get in shape for the summer or occasion. 5 to 7 hours a week of training with a decent diet and people would not be obese. They spend that much time complaining or feeling bad about there low esteem and weight issues. Of course tv and media plays a huge role in that. Most of the lose weight products are crap but why wouldn't they be? If the weight loss companies (fat burners and ab machines)on the whole decided to show people really how to get fit they wouldn't have a business. To get serious information about fitness you have to learn but the, "i think i should buy that", afterthought people experience when watching these crap commericals which don't work just makes them believe, "i'm big boned", "i'm supposed to be fat".

I think you could add some things in your paper about the future of working out (which has already started) with the video game workout machines ... not really talking about that dancing game the kids play but like the interactive machines like the bikes that have a video game in front of u, etc ... they actually had a news report this morning about how physical therapy is using this new technology and people dont experience near as much pain b/c they are mentally distracted and ar "playing" the video game instead of focusing on the thearpy that are doing .. here is the link to that story

Newf: Thanks for letting me know your views on exercise.

Kb420711: You're right, the future of fitness (especially related to motiving children) is in gaming. There have been a lot of innovations lately, and I thank you for sending me that link. If I waas writing an essay, I think I would definately look into this area, however I need to design, develop, produce and market and actual product or service completely different than what is already out there. It is a great place to start, though, and I thank you for your help:)
