Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

Far out, Tom.

Blancita is right - you carried the extra weight well - but what a difference!! And you have abs!! omg! I don't care how many packs you call it. That is very, very cool. (Ooomahmah ... keep your thoughts to yourself, felici!) I liked seeing your pretty bike too.

Thank you for posting the photos. :D They are a credit to your hard work and fantastic attitude. You are an inspiring package!

and Happy Birthday!!

OMG....look at you with that six pack going on! Wow! I'm so impressed and happy for you at your progress with it all...you deserve to be 110% proud of yourself...and I loved reading about your century ride...man, forget about "Fit by 60"...how about "Hot and Fit at 59....Hotter and Fitter at 60"?

Great pics Tom!! Really, wow. Check out the abs! You have a great base of musculature. The more you expose it, the better you are going to look.... very anxious to see where this path takes you!

LOL, I'll let you in on a little secret, Steve. Before this pic, I set up a vacuum cleaner to run in reverse, and then stuck the end in my mouth. Talk about sucking it in!!

Yes, I'm anxious to see where this takes me too. I plan to ease back on the long rides a bit, now that I've done the century.

Far out, Tom.

Thanks, Felici. I have always gained a lot of strength from your support.

Cym, you and all my other friends are giving me such a swelled head, I'm back up to 270 lbs. again!

Well, I do concede I am reasonably fit for my age. My daughter last night told me I had been officially expelled from the Couch Potato League.

But. . . there's still 25 or 30 lbs. to come off, so I have my work for this coming year cut out for me!

WOW I'm with CYM and Kim and Claud, you're looking smokin'! To be honest I didn't know that the 1st pic was from last year, and I thought, hmmmmm, then I saw the next two and was like, "NO WAY!!" You are so good, Steve was right, you're "Pre-wired for success." We're all so in awe of you, Tom!

Happy Birthday Tom. It defiantly looks like this year has been a challenging one, but well worth it. Again, Congratulations on all the hard work, it looks like it is paying off.

Workout Log, 7/23/2007

SunnyDee & David - Thanks!

Today was a tough workout day.

I'm not sure if I'm hitting some sort of plateau on my upper body strength, or if I'm still a bit worn out from yesterday. Anway, I was really struggling on most of the exercises, with the exception of the calf raise. I haven't been able to improve on 170 lbs. in the bench press for 3 weeks now, and it's not getting easier, either. I'll keep trying for 5 or 6 more weeks, but if I get nowhere, I'll ask Steve.

Of course, at my age, not losing strength can be considered a gain of some sort! :)

The Weights portion of the workout took 29 minutes and burned 222 calories.

After that, I had a HIIT session. The entire session was fairly short - 32 minutes - and burned 502 calories. I did 5 x 1 minutes sprints on the elliptical at 200 rpm, and 5 x 30 second sprints at 235 rpm. The rest of the time was warmup and cool down and rest intervals. I have to say I had had it after 30 minutes of this.

Tomorrow is a straight cardio day -- I think I'll do an easy "recovery ride."

Weight: 226.8 - Well, the Scale Gods have returned in full force! That reading of 223.2 six days ago was the "tease" they use to get me off balance, cocky, and thinking they had gone off to vacation somewhere. All of which I fell for, hook line and sinker, yet again. I am the Charlie Brown to the Scale Gods' Lucy.

The figures from yesterday:
Food: 2,614 calories
Fat: 80 gm, 27%; 20 gm saturated, 7%
Carbs: 297 gm, 43%; 46 gm fiber
Protein: 165 gm, 25%
Alcohol: 19 gm, 5%

NARM: 2,290 c
Exercise: 725 c
Daily Deficit: 401 c
Monthly Deficit: 12,043 c

The highest monthly deficit I've ever had was in May, with 12,900 calories. It looks like I'll be well beyond that when the month ends. We'll see how much of that translates into actual weight loss.

Some people probably wonder why I weigh myself every day and put myself through this misery. Actually, it's not misery for me. After all these months, I'm quite familiar with the "noise" inherent in daily weighings. But the scale keeps me honest. Just when I'm getting cocky, and think that extra snack won't hurt, the Scale Gods come back and remind me of their presence. This translates into a lot of tiny little decisions during the day, and by the end of the month, these dozens or even hundreds of choices turn into real progress. It's not a system for everyone, but it certainly has worked for me.

One nice thing - my body fat has dropped a full percentage point this month so far, from 24.4% on July 1, to 23.1% today. That means I still have a lean mass of 173 lbs., which means 13% body fat when I reach 200 lbs.

This Saturday, I'm going to do the dunk tank body fat test. A local health club is doing a promotion, and for $49, you can get the test, along with a complete metabolic report. It'll be interesting to see how that corresponds with my own readings.

Morning Tom. I showed my wife (wow that sounds strange to me) your shirtless pic last night and she was like, "damn! he's got big abs"

Seriously, your abs impress the hell out of me.

LOL, you are awfully kind. :D

You do realize that I was "sucking it in", right?

Still, a year ago, no matter how much I sucked, the abs were buried underneath 60 lbs. of fat. Now they're just buried under 25 lbs. of fat. :)

You don't get it, do you.

Very few people can actually see their abs. Hell, witout flexing mine at the moment, you can't see mine either.

Well, I'm glad you're not upset with the weight--not to mention, HELLO yesterday was your birthday, and I think everyone on here (except maybe CYM) has experienced a higher reading the DAB-Day. Yes, weighing yourself everyday can be trying, but as you said, you're used to it and it really can help you stay on track!

I'm very curious what your dunk test will turn out......

LOL, it must be from all those crunches I do. . . NOT!

By the way, if you ever want to gain weight, I have the perfect method -- ride a bike for 110 miles. You'll gain a pound a day for the next 3 days -- I did! :D
