Fit by 60! - TomO's Pledge

In defence of "most women"...

I think many still believe in spot reduction and typically it's thighs and stomach that bother most women.

I bet "most women" don't know what a dead lift is.

Even when I was obese, I was still walking 35-40 miles every week and at a reasonably fast pace.

Many people do the best they can with the information they have. It's also much easier for a "skinny chick" of 140 pounds to hit the gym and feel comfortable branching out to anything other then a machine.

Sorry guys - but these kind of over generalizations are bothering me lately.

Deb, I didn't mean to single out women. For every woman on the ab machines, there is a guy doing bicep curls. The men are no more educated than the women, that's for sure. Women tend to believe in spot reduction; men tend to believe in instant muscle gain.

I was answering Valerie, so I referred to women. But most men don't know what a deadlift is, either. In the past four months, I've seen exactly 3 men do deadlifts in my gym.

I don't think I'm over-generalizing when I say that most people believe in various myths about nutrition, dieting, and exercise. I believe that's a fact; and if my observations in the gym count for anything, they corroborate that fact.

I grant you, it's very, very hard to get good information. First, there's a huge business that lives off the obesity epidemic -- everyone from the big pharma companies to the high fructose corn syrup manufacturers. The more ignorant people are about how to lose weight and keep it off, the more they profit. There was an article in the NY Times Magazine this weekend about how the Farm Bill supports the food manufacturers who contribute to the obesity epidemic, while not giving a dime to the growers who could help solve it, e.g. organic food growers.

Second, good information is far less palatable than a myth. In the short run, it is easier to believe in spot reduction, miracle pills and diets, and other easy solutions.

And finally, there is still a lot that is unknown about this whole process. You can look up a "study" on the internet to prove just about anything under the sun. So it's very hard to know whom to trust.

Exercise Log - 4/24/2007

Today was (UGGGHHH!) Steady State Cardio day. I would have done another interval session, but I've really been pushing the old legs, and I have another weight training tomorrow. So I figured the best thing was to just grin and bear it.

Stepmill, 63 minutes, 969 calories.
Max hr = 146 (87% of max)
Avg hr = 136 (81% of max)

I went 4.9 miles, and 230 floors.

So far in April I've logged 2,038 minutes of exercise, for an expenditure of 16,541 calories (or the equivalent of 4.7 pounds). I find that interesting, because even though my month to date energy deficit is around 6,000 calories, I've lost a total of 4.2 pounds, much closer to the amount I've exercised. I'll keep my NARM at 9.7 calories per pound for May, but if I keep losing at this rate, I'm going to up ti to 10 calories per pound.

Since December 2006 at the gym, where I have seen literally thousands of people work out, I have seen exactly 3 women do bb squats, and 0 do deadlifts.

Most of the women spend half their time on the abductor and adductor and ab machines.

Mythology is alive and well in the fitness industry. It puts my worship of the scale gods and GOM to shame!
Going back a day or so here ... :D
I agree mostly with this, there are that crowd. However at my gym there is a definate following of women who do decent weights. Also men as well. The rest tend to only go for a couple weeks then drop off the radar.

Oh, and i like the graphs and stuff *G*

Hey Tom,
I find I do better when I keep track of everything too.

Thanks for your explanation, your post was well worded and intended.

I think that often times the support aspect of this site gets forgotten. I've had pm's from people who don't feel comfortable posting because they weigh 100+ pounds more then some girl who's 140 pounds and complaining about being "fat".

A lot of women, and I'm talking about obese women, have such a hard time getting to a gym, that I think what they're doing is a good thing. Is it perfect, probably not, but few of us here can say we are, or that we've *always* done the RIGHT thing - whether in diet or exercise.

Losing 20 pounds does not an expert make. I've lost 80+ pounds and am constantly learning - as I'm sure many of those chicks who aren't doing dead lifts or running 15 miles a week. It's a long, ongoing process.

Wishes, that would be a very nice gym! I'd love to see that, though I doubt I ever will at LA Fitness, where I work out.

Deb: I sure hope I don't come across as one of those "15 minute experts." If I do, then I'm very sorry -- it was unintended, and I'll be more careful about phrasing what I say here.

In fact, I have done the WRONG thing most of my life, which is why I'm sitting here as probably the oldest person on WLF still trying to straighten my life out. Not a very good advertisement for my "expertise," that's for sure!

I'm very, very hesitant to recommend my program to anyone. Aside from it's not being appropriate for most people, it's probably way too much of a stretch for most people. And truth be told, there are a LOT of circumstances working in my favor - working at home, nice income, great gym 5 minutes away, loving family, etc., etc. That makes it a lot easier to handle a program like mine. Hell, who knows? It might even be the reason it's possible at all.

Thanks for your gentle reminder about support - I probably needed it.

Thanks for your gentle reminder about support

I think it's probably good for all of us to be reminded from time to time.

There are *so* many diaries of people who are struggling with 50+ pounds, who really don't get a lot of support or attention to their diaries - that I'm often reminded that what we do and say is being watched by a great many lurkers. Lurkers who's diaries get buried on page 4 because no one responds in them.

I found a diary on page 4 of a someone with 200+ pounds to lose. No one said a word of welcome in his diary. Is this someone who should be criticized while at a gym for not doing just the right exercises?

Probably not - it's about support and knowledge & information comes with time.

Sorry I hit your diary in one of my moods - and as a soap box.

This is true, but what gets my goat is that these same woman often do things to 'distract' people from noticing they are fat... ie wearing inappropriate clothing or doing the goth thing or heaps of other things that are more attention seeking than going into a gym and exercising.
There are a lot of womens only gyms, and personal trainers with one on one gyms going about if needed.
However I dont think problem is not the gym or how much they have to loose. I think the problem lies within the excuses made NOT to loose weight (and im sure we've all made our fair share - heck i know i sure did!).

I find it great. Yesterday i was talking to one of the very fit ladies, My goal is to look like them. Im skinnier, but i dont look like them yet.
So everytime im in the gym im totally inspired by watching these people working around me, I see what they put in, and i know if i want to look like that I have to also put that in. Its great!

Tom you must have pleased the GOM:p I'm down 2 pounds this morning.

Jerry, yesterday I set up a little altar to GOM (well, a hibachi grill, actually) and sacrificed some chicken wings to her. I say "her" for reasons that would make Deb mad, so I won't mention them. :D

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

Well, I think I'm possibly overdoing it on the incense burning for the scale gods and the burnt offerings to GOM. Today I went to worship at the altar and it read 234.6! Good grief, I just can't believe this.

Yesterday was protein day -- turkey meatloaf and eggs or breakfast, shrimp salad for lunch, protein shakes for snacks, and 10 ozs. of sea bass for dinner. I really and truly couldn't eat any more, but even with all that, it only came to 2,015 calories:
Fat: 70 gm, 31%; 18 gm saturated, 8%
Carbs: 157 gm, 29%; 24 gm fiber
Protein: 184 gm, 37%
Alcohol: 0

With my SS Cardio of 969 calories + my NARM of 2,277 calories, I ended up the day with a 1,231 calorie deficit. Hmmm . . . I hope I'm not overdoing it here. Still, I only have an accumulated deficit of 7,123 calories for the month, which is right on target.

I'd stop the incense burning and burnt offerings to GOM, but I'm afraid the retribution would be swift and terrible.

I added a little twist to my protein shake yesterday that I enjoyed. Normally, it's 1 scoop of whey, 1 cup of nonfat milk, 1 cup of frozen strawberries, and 1 cup of frozen mango, with a handful of ice, all blended. This time I squeezed a half lemon into the mix. Delicious!

Sounds like you are doing great Tom :) Your protein shake sounds good too... hm... might have to try it! :)

It's amazing what the break did for you, huh? ;)

Keep it up!

You mean, it's not the incense and burnt offerings? And there's no refunds on that stuff, either.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking too. I'm going to do 2 more 18 day routines, and then take another week off. That will just about coincide with the time I plan to redo our whole back yard.

Sounds like a good plan. It is good to plan your breaks. However, sometimes breaks are required before the planned time off.

For instance, I always take a week off from dieting and training at least every 12 weeks. However, often times it is sooner than this. Things like a slow down in progress, aches and pains, etc., dictate my breaks for the most part.

It's the incense... Trust me!

I will need some authentic testimonials if the "Burning Incense, Burning Fat" book is going to fly buddy. Help a guy out and yer in for a cut!

sirant

How nice that the scale gods are giving you a break! - Regardless of the reason!

I have to agree about that shake! It sounds very yummy! :)
