Well I hope everyone here has a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm taking a week off for a much needed vacation. We're going up to San Francisco and having TDay with our kids up there. We originally thought they would be bringing their SO's, but as it turns out they both broke up last month, so it'll just be the 4 of us. No matter, we get along so well, and we'll have a lot of fun.
This weekend I passed the 3,000 mile mark on my bike. For the 3rd time, I went up Torrey Pines, and I was amazed how much "easier" it was. I had my pulse rate at 162 (95%+) for a full 15 minutes, but I kept a steady rate of around 8 mph up the 6 to 8% grade.
On the way back down I had to apply the brakes quite a bit. I was up to 43 miles per hour but I was a bit nervous about going any faster because there was a fair amount of wind and the road is kind of rough. Good thing I did that -- at the bottom of the hill I heard a big racket around my rear wheel - my rear disk brake came apart. The tire was OK, but the brake was hosed, so I limped at 8 mph to the nearest bike shop, where they took care of it.
I did the climb after already going 55 miles at a pretty fast clip, so my thighs were really toast. Lots of cramping that night, but the next day I was OK again.
Today I'm taking my bike in for a much needed tuneup. They'll tighten everything up and replace the chain. That should be good for the next 3,000 miles.
My weight got up to 224 again 3 days ago, but now it's back down to 220.6. My wife is astounded that I'm not losing weight with all the biking I do. She sees what I eat and thinks something is wrong with me.
I don't think so. My metabolism is probably a bit on the "slow" side, but it really proves that you can't keep your weight under control with exercise alone. Even to maintain, you have to watch what you eat very carefully. That's why I think weighing yourself every day is a good thing for me. When I creep up, I subconsciously cut back and probably even exercise a bit harder.
Anyway, I hope all of you have a great week -- see you when I return!
