First workout in years...sore...help!

I decided that today would be the first day to go to the gym because I have got to lose weight! I excercised for almost two hours this morning and went back this afternoon for a little over an hour. I could definetely tell I was getting sore the second time around. Right now I feel the soreness coming on and it's miserable. Anyone have any tips or advice on helping not to get/be so sore? Please help! I know if I'm already this sore, by tomorrow it will be much worse and by Friday I probably won't be able to walk lol. Please give me any advice you may have. Thankyou!!!

well, for starters... you WAY overdid it. You worked out for a long time then came back later and did some more after how long of not doing anything? If your body is not accustomed to being that physical, then you run it through a marathon session of not one, but two workouts in one day... its gonna be sore.

I understand what it is to excited about doing something and overdoing it... I've been there and paid the price.

Hell, even now, being in possibly the best shape of my life, I get sore doing certain things. Right now I'm nursing a stiff neck from not falling right in my MMA class on Monday. My own damn fault, now I have to suck it up and deal while I recover.

What I'd recommend, or at least what I'd do... when you work out, make sure you warm up before and stretch out after. Gentle stretching... don't force yourself into touching your toes if you can't do it! Rather gently stretch, and when you meet resistance, inhale, see if you can slightly extend it farther on the exhale. Gets a little easier each time.

Tomorrow, miserable or not... you'll need to move a bit to help loosen your muscles back up. Warm up and gentle stretching. It will help in the being able to move around department... and help not be so miserable on Friday. Potassium also helps with the muscle soreness... like drinking a small V-8 after working out or I'll drink a glass of milk.

When you return to the gym, don't overdo it! You don't need to go twice a day, at least not yet. Let your body become re-accustomed to physical activity first.

And if you haven't already...

READ THE STICKIES in the exercise forum... there's helpful info to be had.

Good luck!

Hey there!
Sounds like you're motivated, that's for sure!
Hold on to that but like Phoenyx said, you over did it!! Start slow, give your body a chance.. otherwise you'll just hurt yourself, get way sore and not want to work out again! lol..
I know it's hard to not jump in with both feet, but take it slow. Let your body adjust and just keep doing it, day by day.. It'll happen. It takes time, not a lot but some.
Enjoy the process because you're going to make the changes now that stick for a life time!! And in the end that's what matters. Anybody can drop weight but the trick is to keep it off!! :)
You can do it!
Keep it up but slow down! :)

Thanks for the advice. I kept trying to stay active as much as possible and stretch as much as I could yesterday. To be honest I wasn't as sore as I thought I would be. Last night was the worst of it. Today wasn't so bad. Next time, I'm definetly not going to over-do it.

See? There ya go!

Hey, I did a pretty intense workout yesterday and I'm feeling it today. But I look at it as proof that I'm doing it right. A tad sore, but not in a lot of pain like I pulled something.

No pain, no gain. Or loss, as the case may be. :biggrinjester:

I worked out hard yesterday but this morning I'm just a tiny bit sore in my calves so woohoo! This must be working since as of yesterday I lost four pounds since last wednesday :D Thankyou for all the help:D
