Hi!
I'm a 22 female trying to lose weight for the first time...FOR REAL.
In the past I've tried a few times but only for a day. Now I really have the motivation to do so and it's something I've enjoyed doing so far.
I'm 5'8" and I weighed 240lbs when I began a week ago. Now I'm at 233lbs. and already feeling much better about myself.
I walk for about 90 minutes-2 hours a day and my average diet consists of:
-A banana for breakfast
-Apple or cut up cucumber for lunch
-Frozen yogurt for a snack
-Watermellon for dinner
-A coffee or diet coke for another snack
This past week wasn't too bad because I finally feel like I have some control over what I eat and I no longer crave the foods which once controlled me.

My goal is be down to 180lbs by Christmas.

Welcome

Hi Blondee

Congratulations on your motivation. It makes it so much easier to loose weight when you are motivated!

It sounds like you have your excercise well under control. I don't mean to be rude and I hope that I am not out of place but to me (and I'm no expert) it seems that you are not eating enough. Are you vegetarian? or do you not like eating meat? But I really don't think eating watermelon for dinner and a cucumber for lunch is enough.

I hope you don't mind me saying that. And well done on your weightloss so far!

Take Care
Laura

Hi Blondee. You seem to have the motivation thing down very good. Awesome job. I agree with Laura about your diet. Eating alot of fruit is not good for some people because of the sugar content and also the fiber content. A well balanced diet is the key along with your 8 glasses of water. Don't forget that everytime you drink a cup of coffee, you have to replace that with a glass of water. Coffee does not count as your glass of water. ;) The is a really great website if you want to track your progress. It is

Hello. Let me tell you from my own experience (and I should know, cos I've been overweight/obese since I was 4 years old) that the strict diet you're on will indeed make you lose weight pretty fast. That's the good news. The bad news is that weight which you lose fast comes back with the vengeance just as fast! I've had times in the past where by simply not eating anything for almost a week I could lose 5-6 kilos... and it would take me a week or two to put them back on with reinforcements! In order to achieve something durable, you must not starve yourself. You can occasionally have 1 day with zero or close-to-zero calories, but that should only be occasional. The secret is to lose weight slowly over a longer period of time. If you lose like 4-5 kilos per month, that's a good rate. Second, I dunno if you're a vegetarian or not, but it's a healthy idea to eat some meat as well, your body needs the proteins. It's a good idea to have for example 200 grams of meat and some raw vegetables for lunch. This "trick" was my main battle plan, and it lost me 22 kilos (that means almost 50 pounds). Good luck and remember, don't starve yourself, it's not healthy ;) Oh, and another thing, many doctors actually recomend that you quit coffee alltogether while you diet. Especially since coffee is not good on an empty stomach, and considering that you only have watermelon, that thing is 90% water so your stomach will be empty ;)
Cheers

Thanks everyone for your advice...
I have changed my diet thanks to you all and to being completely exhausted.
This is what I've been having now:
Breakfast: Apple
Lunch: Salad with salsa for dressing
Dinner: 6 slices of turkey and cucumbers
I feel much better now and have more energy to exercise...
Thanks again!!!

Are you using any kind of program to record your calories and the nutrients that you are getting -- or rather not getting?

Your calorie count seems awfully low - any less than 1200 calories a day and long term you will have a problem...

It's good that you obviously have an amazing amount of self control but you need to seriously adjust your diet. For example on piece of fruit, be it apple or banana isn't a breakfast. One piece of fruit would be good to have with you breakfast...

I forgot where I read this (it may have been here somewhere) but it's so true and works wonders in a slow and steady weight loss that will stick.

Breakfast should be a meal fit for a king
Lunch should be a meal fit for a peasant
and Dinner the meal of a pauper.

You're body needs lots of nutrients in the morning to get you off to a good day, with lots of energy. The energy you are going to need to shed those pounds. A healthy lunch will maintain that level of energy and keep you going. By dinner time a light meal at least a few hours before bed is the best option. You should try to get at least 3 of the 4 food groups in each meal in proper portion sizes. What you are doing now will help you shed the pounds fast but you can't live like that for the rest of your life and when you go back to eating a normal diet you are risking putting back on what you worked so hard to lose.

Don't rush, think about it this way if you've been over weight for years what's one or two years to wait to get to your ideal size? Lose 1 or 2 lbs a week and when you are all done it won't seem like a battle to stay that way :)

Good Luck use your extreme determination and self control and put it to use the right way.

It does look miserly low. I'm glad that you have now added some protein with the turkey. Diet too hard and without enough good nutrition (including protein) and your muscle is going to waste quicker than body fat. You might see great results on the scales - but it is perfectly easy to become a malnourished fat person - poor form, fitness, health - low scale weight but still with too much body fat. You can lose everything that is physically good, and maintain the bad stuff.

I don't agree that too much fruit is a bad thing - fruit is great food - it protects and enhances so much of your health. It takes alot of a poor mix of fruit to do much harm. But its no good on its own.

My first recommendation would be to beef up that breakfast - replace that apple with something more suitable for breaking fast. A nice bowl of low fat unrefined cereals and low fat milk is one better option.

Just another suggestion

It looks like everybody is looking out for your best interest in the diet department...I know that I used to skip breakfast all the time and ended up eating more later in the day...my suggestion for breakfast is a peanut butter sandwich (2 slices of whole wheat bread and no more than 2 tblsp of low sodium or reduced fat peanut butter) and a banana...I started eating this after I found out I had an underactive thyroid, which totally screws up your metabolism, and it gave me great energy throughout the morning...hope this helps!!

I stuck your meals for yesterday in my fitday progam and your total calorie intake for the day (assuming you ate an entire cucumber and 6 thick pieces of turkey) came out to 733 calories. *shock* You are going to faint from starvation soon. Eat! Eat! Eat!

Diets are not about how little you eat...it's about controlling the portions of what you eat.

Go to fitday.com, it'll help you plan out a great 1200 calorie diet that will ensure that you'll lose weight and keep it off.

I would add some protein with breakfast (cottage cheese if you like it, egg whites, something like that) and have some turkey or plain tuna with your salad at lunch time.
