Feeling a Little Demotivated

Ok, so I'm 16, 6' 1" and around 190 lbs at the moment. I started out at 260 lbs back in Dec, and have been losing the weight by eating properly and exercising most days.

So, for the past 2 months I've hovered at around 190. I'm eating enough calories for sure, if anything I'm eating too many calories (but I don't think enough for me to hover at this weight, given my exercise regime):

So this school year I decided to join the hardest P.E. Class in my highschool- it's a weight training class for the football team, and they work you to the bone. Every day we:

- Run two laps of a football field
- Do stretches, core workouts like sit ups, tabletop, body planks etc.
- Do different runs up and down the stadium stairs, e.g. hop up on one leg, 3 steps up a step facing sideways, all those football techniques
- Go inside, and lift weights (we have workout schedules, like Monday is front squat and leg press, Tuesday is Powerclean and hangclean, as well as push press etc. so that all our muscle groups are worked out)

So lately, I haven't lost any weight. I expected this at first with the weights, but I thought surely some inches would go down too. Nope, I've actually gained a lot of inches, even in places I didn't think I would (around the stomach, around the thigh).

So my inches are the same/higher, my weight is the same/higher, and the pictures of last month vs. this month are only different- as in, my body looks different, but not necessarily less of it, just more shape.

I've still got roughly 40 lbs more to lose before I'd be happy with my weight- so is there any way to still lose fat in a weights class but still gain muscle??

Please help!

Your target weight is 150 pounds at 6'1"?, that seems a little low to me.

Are you keeping a diet journal and tracking the foods you eat, or are you just counting the calories you are consuming?

It may have something to do with exactly what you are eating as opposed to the number of calories that you are taking in, in addition to the new workout regime

150 is the lowest I think I'd go- I'm 192 right now and judging only by my body fat I'm guesstimating in the 160's for a nice lean body.

I'm counting calories really, I keep an online journal some days. I usually average around 2,000 calories, I have to make sure I don't eat too little otherwise I won't gain muscle and I won't be helping my body whatsoever.

Maybe I should just keep at this weight for now and try and lose fat after this school year is over?

I want a low body fat percentage for basketball, here's some pictures of myself, they're current, I'm at around 193 lbs:

I think there's definitely a good 40 lbs of fat I could lose there- it just doesn't seem to want to come off whilst I'm weight lifting. I'm gaining hella muscle, just not losing fat. :-(

I'm no expert but I've seen alot of info that Steve has posted on this subject throughout the forum and he's very knowledgeable, especially when it comes to weight training vs. fat loss. If you ask him he's always very helpful with info. I tried to find the post I'd read the other day but he has so many it's hard to weed through them all if you're looking for a certain one.

Hi,

150lbs would give you a BMI of around 19.5, which even though is still in the healthy range, it is on the low side.

40lbs of fat you could lose!!! Dude, if you have more than 15-20lbs to lose I'll eat a big ol tasty chocolate cake...;)

But seriously, keep up the hard work and you'll get there :)

:seeya:

You will need to search the threads (I used the keywords 'lose fat gain muscle' and the user name 'Steve' in the advanced search on this site... got a lot of results that looked promising).

If my memory serves correctly, I think you will want to first focus on taking off some of the fat, THEN focus on building the muscle. You'll need to work in a caloric deficit to take off the weight, but if you are trying to gain muscle, you are going to have to up your caloric intake. That's the ultra short version of it, but there's probably a lot more that goes in to it... like what to eat for bulking, etc. Steve's definitely the one to read his posts about this subject, he's done it quite well.

Thanks very much for all your help, since posting this I've started losing again (4lbs since I started the thread) and the weight lifting is continued, just with less calories.

I just have no idea how much more weight I need to lose, because when you're very fat or obese, 20lbs barely makes a difference- but when you're coming up to your goal, it could make the difference of looking pudgey to looking like Stalone lol.
