feel a little weird about this

so i feel a little uncomfortable about being a member to a forum about weight loss, i guess i always thought it was me giving up and admitting im overweight. but after i looked around this site for a few minutes i realized it wasn't just about people with a weight problem it was for anyone wanting to be healthier. and im hopping i could get some good advice from all you people out there in internet land :)

so my story:

im a 18(almost 19) senior in high school. im at about 6'1" to 6'3" and around 290. i play football so not many people tell me i need to lose weight(having a big guy like me on the field really helps) but ive always been a little self conscious about my weight and ive always wanted to shed some pounds. now that football seasons over i figure itd be a good time to get in shape and build some strength for when i go out for training camp at college.

its not that i want to get super lean and ripped in a short amount of time i just want to get into the habit of healthy eating and regular exercise.
i work great with encouragement so i figured if i make posts here and get some comments and feedback that will really help me stick with it. :D

anywho, sorry for the long intro. and hello

Welcome to the forum, your right almost everybody here has a goal of getting a little more fit and healthy, most but not all are looking to loose fat even those that are athletes.

a good way to track your progress and get support is to start a thread in the diary/journal section.

Hello and welcome.

The first thing I'd suggest is registering for a free account on or and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

The next thing I'd suggest is read as much as you can of the posts on the board, especially anything that's marked "sticky". There is a ton of good information around here and a lot of times questions that new folks have has already been answered very thoroughly - so do take the time to look around and read. :)

Hope that helps you to get started.
