Hi All,

Im Matt, 30 from Stoke on Trent in the UK.

Im 5ft8", 22 stone 9 pound (317 pound).

Stocky Built (used to do weights)

Got a lovely wife to be and 2 lovely boys (3 and <1)

Decided its time to get this horrible weight off me and start to enjoy life again.

What sort of calories do people think i should be aiming for each day to lose about 3-4 pound a week?

Ive been doing no exercise at all and literally sitting about all day long (i work from home) , so need to do it gently as even walking across the grass in front of my house gives me an achey back.

Hi and welcome :)

I too had zero exercise level (unless you count sex lol) I started out simply walking to start building up my endurance, I was lucky enuff to get a treadmill for christmas....at first I could barely do 4 minutes without wanting to puke....Im happy to say after 3 weeks up Im to 11 minutes a 3 mph (may not be much to some but to me its like scaling Everest lol)

Last thursday I started at the gym (Im ashamed to say I've had a membership for 7 years I've never ever used) and have now been 4 whole times lol

Do you have access to gym? My advice is to start out walking and build from there...oh and drink water. Every person I have talked to says I need to take 1/2 my weight and drink that in ounces (sorry dont know what that converts to in metric lol)

Starting a diary here is a good thing too....it helps you to be "accountable" to what you're doing and eating....if you're honest about it :)

Good luck!!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

So... my weight is 317 pound which comes to 2536 ounces , surely that doesnt mean i need to drink over 100 pints a day , lol

Could you be so kind to work it out for me and poist it here. My weight is 317 pound

Matt

lol its easy just take your weight of 317 and divide in 1/2...that comes out to 158.5, so according to what everyone has told me and what I have read, you would drink 158.5 ounces of water which according to my converter would be 4.68 liters

here is one place I found that

How Much Water do You Need to Drink?
A good estimate is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That gives you the number of ounces of water per day that you need to drink. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink at least 80 ounces of water per day. If you exercise you should drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink alcohol, you should drink at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another two servings per day. As you can see, your daily need for water can add up to quite a lot.

Twenty percent of your water need will come from the foods you eat. The rest of your water need should come from the beverages you drink. Water is the best choice. Sodas have a lot of sugar in them, so if you drink sodas, you may take in more calories than you need. Herbal teas that aren't diuretic are fine. Sports drinks contain electrolytes and may be beneficial, just look out for added sugar and calories that you don't need. Juices are good because they have vitamins and nutrients.

Caffeinated beverages will also add to your daily water need. Even though caffeine is a diuretic, if you regularly consume caffeine, your body will regulate itself to that diuretic effect.

as for calories you can eat anything from say 1800 upwards.

try working out how many calories you use in a day and how much you want too loose. its up to you how hard you go. Have a look at

Matt,
3-4 pounds a week is a lot of weight to lose!
I know you want the fat gone, but 1.5 to 2 pounds a week might be a better way to go.

p.s. I'm an ex-Brit. Loved my visit to Stoke-on-Trent years ago. Went to Barlaston, to the potteries. I was working for the John Lewis partnership at the time..in their china + glass dept.
