Fatter?

Am I the only one who goes out and sees mainly thin people around town? I keep hearing about how Americans are fatter than ever, but I'm not seeing it around my area. I don't know, maybe because I'm dieting I'm just focusing on all the thin people I see.

It may just be what you are looking for, or it may be where you are hanging out. The beach has a lot of skinny people. Cracker Barrel? Not so much.

I agree with the bumper sticker idea. :)

I don't hang out at the beach, though. (With my fat self? No way, Hosea!) I do frequent the malls - seems to be the hangout for all those skinny teen girls and upscale trophy wife moms. ;) But I also see skinny people a lot around my neighborhood (lol, not very motivating when I take walks and see them chowing down on junk food).

I see it all over!

I live in a beach town that has a LOT of college students... so it seems that most people around here are THIN.

What gets to me is that I feel really uncomfortable in the bathing suit so I avoid the beach, as do many of my friends who aren't stick figures. BUT guys don't seem to care if they are skinny or not. I hate the duoble standards.

Ok so I'm just jealous, but ONE DAY I WILL be comfortable enough to strut out on the sand & wear that two piece & then lounge like there is no tomorrow on that beach. Enjoying my time, instead of freaking out wondering if someone I might know might see me & see how big & out of shape I really am.

I feel exactly the same way... MoonGoddess hit the nail right on the head.

I don't even live in a city with a beach... or even a view of the ocean for that matter... and I feel like everyone around me is thin, as well!

I live in Idaho where right now everyone is bundled up because of the cold and even in bulky ski jackets everyone is still thin. I don't know where all the overweight people live but it is not in my town!

MoonGoddess, I feel for you living in a college town. I went back to college recently and feel like Attila the Hun next to these skinny teenage girls.

Dragonlover, I am always amazed at those people in ski jackets who can still look skinny. You'll never catch me in a bulky jacket - I've got enough bulk of my own.

I have the same experience. I see mostly thin people when I go out too. However I do live in kind of a snobbish suburban town so maybe that's why.

I never did like the beach, I don't like to swim and I hate how the sand sticks to your feet after you get out of the water. However I'm kind of a "big and beautiful" activist so I have not been afraid to go to the beach in my swimsuit when my kids want to go. Now I don't wear a bikini or anything, just a normal one piece suit with a swim skirt on it, and I do get some snickers, yet I feel that I have just as much right to be on the beach as anyone else. :)

I admire you.

I just can't bring myself to do it. I have issues about my body.. even when I was in high school & my skinniest (thanks to anorexia, which I hope to never again subcome to) I never really felt comfortable about my body or being in a swim suit.

Honestly I don't even really own a pair of shorts that I feel comfortable about wearing in public.

ONE DAY I WILL.

until then I am sooo glad for the support & inspiration I gain from this website.

Funny, but this past summer when I was between 150-160 lbs, I had less qualms about my body on the beach than when I was 110 lbs. When I was thinner, I always thought that because of my practically flat chest my thighs would become the focal point. But when I started getting fat, I could put a bright, skimpy top on at the beach to (hopefully) get the eyes of my big thighs. Probably didn't work, but I felt better.

Now that I gained 40 more pounds, though, I just stay away from the beach.
