Father and Son Weight Loss

I am new to this site and a big geek in health. I am 18 years old living at home while going to a local university. I am 6 feet tall 185 pounds. My goal is to obtain a complete lifestyle change. I want to change from a partying and physiological depressing lifestyle to an active and healthy one. I have an athletic build and I know I can mold my body in what I want it to be, but I have done some bad things in my life for the past few years. I am now taking the initiative to put an end to the cigarette smoking and marijuana usage. I want to be happy and proud with myself. I’m looking to drop weight (aren't we all) and rebuild my body with muscle. I have a great free weight system in my basement (Iron Grip Strength) along with a treadmill. Along with a new workout plan I am aware that my calorie intake must change along with my diet and eating habits. I take N0 Explode pre-workout and Whey Protein post workout. Ideally I would like to be at 170-173 pounds within the next 2 months. Workouts, diets, and tips on being able to refute a partying lifestyle?
Thanks

Your goals are are similar to mine, in the sense that you want to reinvent yourself.

My Background: Obscenely obese, pushing 400 pounds, ate myself into a hernia that was splitting me open at my gut. I was a food addict, I would regularly buy 3 whopper combos and some cheeseburgers on the side, or 3 different extra large pizzas so I could have all the different types of toppings.

Today, I am a new person. I currently weigh 270, and although my outside does not match my inside, I know it will.

I currently consume only water, nothing else; I also only consume unprocessed foods. I have taught my stomach that it does not need the amount of food that it needed (It really does have a mind of its own) .. Today, I no longer crave processed foods, its amazingly cool to only crave a salad, chicken breast and a glass of water.

My suggestion to you, set a goal for 1 year, and think about this goal all day and every day .. and do it, even if you fail get back up and keep trying, eventually your habits will change. I did this back in January of this year, and it was hard at first, as I would find myself craving taco bell or pizza hut and would slip off, especially due to the munchies I would get from medicating with marijuana, However a miracle happened, something I believed was possible but never had experienced. The day my body learned to use Cannabis as an appetite suppressant (gets rid of hunger PAIN), was the day that I realized that, I am the new me, I had succeeded in reprogramming my mind to adapt to my new habits, .. I was able to do all this in less than 1 year.

Quitting marijuana if you are using it for the wrong reasons, is good. However you should know that this plant is much more than a 'drug' ... It is actually the secret of my success really.

Change can happen if YOU want it bad enough.

Id like to add, We are certainly polar opposites when it comes to our problems, but the underlying goal is the same.. We want to be someone else.

Make jock friends that live sports first. Look into a sports teams to join in the area. Running clubs should be available too, great place for healthy minded people.

What program are you following?

James, I think I’ve recently undergone a change for the better myself. I’ve been put off by processed foods and high carb foods. I’ve just been craving meat lately, I’m fine with vegetables and carbs on the side of the meal but the lion’s share of what I’ve been eating has been whole proteins. I think this may finally be for the better in my life and things are starting to click with the correct food choices I make. It’s hard though, carbs (processed) are so easy to find

I can tell you that I failed for 9 years trying to lose weight that way. Today, im not a vegetarian .. however I limit myself to free-range meat products .. If your goal is to lose weight, i can assure you that this isnt the correct path to do so .. I also am a meat lover, and LOVED the lowcarb diet for this reason. However today my eyes are open, there is so much good food to eat that is natural.

FYI, I'm not saying lowcarb or Atkins diet, I’m just saying if I’m going to eat, I’m putting protein first because I train heavily with weights and have a high maintenance level to maintain optimal protein intake for my body weight and the level of lifting I do. You can see my log in the journals area.

I used to just eat whatever and my protein intake was too low. Now that I eat a higher level of proteins (maintenance levels) I eat less processed food, mostly bread with no protein.

I don’t try to eliminate my carbs, I try to make sure I’m getting protein when I eat, which cuts back on the (overload of)carbs, making my carb intake a healthy level.

O-man your goals seems doable but your going to have to work hard. keep your cardio up, and do some kid of circuit traing when you do your weight lifting it will help you burn more calories and lean out,but also build muscle at teh same time. do you have a workout routine yet, and if your going to try and lean out plus build muscle your going to have to up the protein intake about 1.5 to 2 grams per lb of body weight, not just after workout, all day long. make sure your eating habbits are good. let us kno your workout or a typical day of eating and we can help you from there.

GOODLUCK

You just have to stay focused. It helps if you don't hang out with teh same old people. If you stay away from the, you'll have a better chance of stayimg away from your partying ways.

It sounds like you're making the right kind of changes, I wouldn't lose weight though, you're already fairly light so try adding some muscle to provide more balance.

You're at uni so enjoy it, just limit the partying, don't end it, it's the only chance you'll get to live the lifestyle you do now so make the most of it.
Try and be sensible, take advantage of the uni gym and sports facilities and maybe just go out on Friday and Saturday night. You'll still be social but keeping things in check a little

I just have to say two things:

1) Original poster, kudos for your outstanding attitude. I predict success for you. (Though anyone who has read many of my posts knows that I will recommend eating real food in place of the liquid calories.

2) 420James, smoking kills tons more people than being obese. And that's saying something. I encourage you to reevaluate your strategy.
